Vacationing on the cheap in Northern AZ?

Hi Mammas. I am trying to arrange a short get away for my family before school starts and I am very discouraged trying to find a place to stay! We don't have much money to spend on this trip so I need ideas. Does anyone know of an affordable cabin in either N Az or perhaps on the Rim? I looked online and prices start at $100 a night, which is too much. I was hoping for $50 per night, which is apparently wishful dreaming.

I thought about camping but all we have is a 3 person tent for a 5 person family, no cookstove, no lantern. I suppose we could cook over the campfire, but DH and I are not very outdoorsy people and all I know how to do is roast hot dogs.

Any ideas for vacationing on the cheap would be great! Thanks.

There is a hostel in Flagstaff, but their rates don't look any cheaper than a hotel room. http://www.grandcanyonhostel.com/dub...wDubeauSet.htm

Have you checked accommodations in Sedona or Page? They're hotter (especially Page,) but have their own type of beauty. Lake Powell in Page is really fun if you have an inflatable boat. In the mornings you can do Antelope Canyon, but it is deadly in the afternoon if there are monsoons.

If you're not picky about accomodations, there's a Super 8 in Flagstaff that's pretty cheap. (Maybe 69 a night) We've stayed there and at the Comfort Inn, which is also pretty reasonable. It's right in town, but a short drive to the forest, hiking, lake, etc. Since we spent most of our time out and about and just used the room for showering and sleeping, it wasn't bad. There's so much to do outdoors and the weather is so nice in Flag!

There's also the Ski Lift Lodge and Cabins in Flagstaff. I think it's $69 a night weeknights, and $89 for weekends. It's outside of town in a really pretty woodsy area at the base of the San Francisco Peaks. Not super cheap, but not super spendy either. If you come into Flagstaff there's a catalog called 99 Things to do in Northern AZ that's free in those newspaper stand things on the street corners. There's also a ton of hiking and elk viewing in the area, there's creeks to swim in all over, and Sedona is beautiful to visit

Thanks for the ideas. I'll check into them. The idea of swimming in a creek, hiking, and seeing elk sounds wonderful! It sounds especially wonderful after yet another day of 114 degrees. Whew.

FWIW, When we do "car camping" we bring the grate from our BBQ grill and just do a regular BBQ. Maybe look into REI for renting a tent.... or stay at a hotel, there are so many places to see that you'd hardly be in your room anyhow
