Need advice for getting started with cd a small newborn

So I started trying to cd my 1 1/2 wk old dd yesterday and it started well and ended badly...

Not sure how much she weighs today but she was 5lbs 10oz at birth though. I have 2 dz preemie prefolds, 2 newborn proraps, 2 xs thirsties covers, 3 xs bummis covers along with 2 newborn little lions fitteds.

Most everything still looks too big so I had been using the prefolds with the proraps. Things seemed to be going well until she was ready for bed and I went to pick her up and she was soaked... through her clothes and all the way through the blanket she was wrapped in. She tends to sleep on her side. Could this be the problem? Do you think she's just too skinny and little right now? She still has her cord stump so maybe it will be better when don't have to try to wrap around it?

Today we only tried one cloth diaper and went out and bought more nb disposables for now. I'm not so sure cd will work at night. What do you do? Are there tiny liners that I could use or should I try two prefolds? I tried the snappi to get a better fit but it seemed way too big for her.

Any other suggestions?

I would try using two prefold diapers in the Prowrap cover for naptime and bedtime. You will need to change your baby's diaper during the night to avoid getting things soaked. Maybe with two prefolds the Snappi will work to hold things snug? I would fold one diaper like a soaker to use in the middle of the other diaper (make sense?) for maximum absorbency. My daughter was that small when she was nb but we didn't do cloth until a few months. With my next baby, who is coming soon (another tiny one!) I plan to CD from the start. Hopefully you can find something that works and so can I!

If you crochet, knit, or sew, a wool soaker might be a good option. Absorbant and breathable!

Over two prefolds or a prefold and a hemp doubler would probably work, too, but if you need the bulk to fill up the cover, then the two prefolds might work better.

I know proraps sell a premie cover, which might fit better, but who knows for how long. Depends on how fast your little angel grows.

I have a nb coming in 5 weeks-ish, so we'll be dealing with this again very soon!

I have heard very baby newborn dipes run small. Can anyone confirm or deny that?

I think doubling up the prefolds is your best option for the first little while. Newborns grow like weeds, so hopefully the dipes will be fitting better before you know it!

Newborn dipes do "run small" but they are made for small people! Both of my cd'd newborns were 8.10 & 8.5 at birth and fit into Newborn Prefolds for their first 4-6 weeks, until around 12lbs.

OP, definately try doubling the prefolds, and the wool or even a fleece soaker would work wonders for you compared to the PUL, for over nights. I have to change my babies every time they nurse (blowouts! ) but even once they just start pooping 1-2x a day, and just peeing at night, I have to change them at night until they're about 8 weeks old, and fitting into bigger, more absorbant dipes.

Mine have never worn a disposable tho!!

Wool will be your friend and a worthwile investment. Maybe you can find a used wool sleepsack? That would work great NOW as well as for when they're a little older.

GL & CONGRATS on your new sweet babe!!

eta: Here's a couple wool sleepsacks on hyenacart, I bet you could find a knitting WAHM to make you one too, if you wanted. They go pretty quick and could probably be finished within a week:

Cool, here's one thats available and 1/2way decent!

eta again! LOL!! I have some sweaters that I was recycling for wool covers that I could make you a cover or sleepsack out of. Or it would be SUPER easy to make one yourself!! If you just don't have the time, PM me if you're interested!

Thanks ladies!

I will give cding another try tomorrow. I'll definitely try the two prefolds under the prorap. She weighed in at 6lb 3oz so she is growing quickly and hopefully the problem will quickly be resolved anyway.

I'll definitely try the wool too. The only thing I have ever knit is a not quite finished scarf that I started a few years ago. But my stepmother is quite a fast knitter so I might try to see if she could knit something up. Any good patterns that I could show her?

And thank you so much Alayna for the links and the offer to help. If my stepmother can't do it, I might just take you up on it! And I think you are supermom for having the time! I'm still working on figuring out having three kids!
