Medical articles that talk about why retraction is bad?

Ugh, I'm losing a battle here. :

Today I tried to talk to my pregnant friend about circ. In as delicate and non-confrontational a way as I could muster, I asked if she had read any of the literature I sent her a while back, and I was told that the decision is a private one and is up to her and her dh. I know she's all for it. Part of the problem I'm having getting through to her is that she's a nurse and has, in her words, "personally cared for patients with complications from being uncirced." She lives in such a high-circ area, I'm guessing she's probably only seen complications from forcible retraction.

Does anyone know of any medical sources or studies published in medical journals stating that retraction is the cause of a lot of these problems? Any nurses out there have tips for me on getting through to one of their own who does not appreciate hearing medical info from a non-medical person?

Sorry this is happening, but it seems like you have done what you can. You have tried to talk to her, you have sent her information. If her mind is made up, she probably won't change it even if you sent her more information.

Maybe if you could somehow have her see a circ being done...have her watch a video of it maybe.....that is what did it for me.

If you keep pushing the issue when she basically told you in a polite way to butt out, then you may end up damaging your friendship.

She HAS seen one being done, live and in person, and she said it's one of the few procedures she's witnessed that almost made her faint. Figure that one out!

I appreciate the advice. At this point I'm more worried about making sure I can live with myself when this is all said and done, knowing that I did absolutely everything in my power to prevent this.

The AAP Intact Care Guide is one that I know of but there are more resources in the sticky at the top of the page.

I am so glad you are trying. I wouldnt give up until the circ is done personally. You never know what might get through.

I don't know about retraction links (glongley may have some) but you can remind her of the many surgical complications because of circ, including botched circ jobs (as a nurse I've seen a few of these).
But if she's a nurse and has seen the procedure and still wants it done, I'm doubting you can do much more to chance her mind.
