Help for my non speaking toddler - 16 months - Page 3

I don't think you need to be concerned yet but if you are, get him evaluated. DS didn't have any real words until 20m or so and almost immediately learned his colors/shapes/numbers/and alphabet. His vocabulary at 27 is outstanding.

Hello, an update

My lo turned 2 last week.
He got evaluated for speech and they found him 'perfect' in all accounts.
Ear evaluation didn't turn out anything either. He had one ear infection at 8mo which I treated with home made garlic oil and by allowing the fever to happen. Never again, knock on wood.

He is still very limited in talking, he goes to preschool and the difference with classmates is obvious. However, he points, signs, nods, makes very complex facial expressions and when needed, he will use a word.

I find that locating things he use frequently out of reach forces him to call them. sometimes he uses the real name like when he says jugo (juice) or leche (milk) and sometimes he invents a words; all things flour are noh-noh (bread, apple cobblers, or crackers).

Other times he uses a word once, and not repeat it ever again. ONCE he said ascensor (elevator) while knocking at the elevator door. He has said Mozart 3 times in about a year.

He uses 'no' and 'mine' he refers to some animals by the noice they make 'co-co' (bird) arf-arf(dog) mieaw (cat) eeehheeee(horse) mooo(cow)

So, plenty of words, I think, just not as many as most kids his age.
I am super extremely relieved I did the evaluations, they were all free through the state of Florida.

He is fine, just not into talking..
A friend of mine with her dd on same classroom claims she wishes she had my problem, her daugther is a chatter box but at 2yr old, she doesnt want to eat anything but milk.

We are indeed wired to worry, but I learned a lot by doing the evaluations and if anything, there is no harm.
I have a very clever coworker who starting talking after he turned 3...I sure hope mine doesn't take that long!!!

Glad the 'experts' think all is well He sounds a LOT like my youngest, who is now 3.5... he literally did not say a word that wasn't mumum or dada until he was 2.5yo to the DAY. Now, of course, he doesn't shut up At some point he'll probably sort out that this talking thing has it's uses and is more efficient at getting him what he wants, and then it will be ON lol.
