tender boobs anyone?

hi all,

my baby is 4 days old and my milk came in the night before last. yesterday i was super engorged, but today is much better. except that on the side of my left breast i feel extremely tender. it's actually quite painful. is this definitely a sign of a clogged duct or infection? or is it normal at this juncture to be extremely tender and sore.

thanks!

When I went from exclusive pumping to exclusive nursing, I was really engorged and (because I'd been pumping more than she ate) and my boobs felt bruised and tender for a few days until my supply evened out. When I had a plugged duct a few weeks before, there was also redness. Try cabbage leaves, it's supposed to help.

Be careful with cabbage leaves - they can also dry up your milk!

For me running warm water over my breasts in the shower (when I can get one) helps - although it makes your milk come in. Sigh.

At seven weeks pp my breast are still very sensitive - although they usually are normally too. I don't know why - I think it's due to their increased weight.

I would say clogged duct or perhaps you've been massaging it too harshly? They are very sensitve to bruising in those early days when engorged. My 3 year old bumped into mine on the far left side and it was super sore for nearly a week. Get lots of warm water on it, check for clogs on your nipple, and be carefull with it. It's tricky because massage is good for a clogged duct but obviously not good for a bruise!
