On the road to policy change at work

I’ve posted a few times about my troubles with trying to find a place to pump at work. My experience is probably typical but it was still frustrating. At one point I thought they were looking for a “valid” reason to fire me. I ended up in some pretty hot water over this. I’m back to work now and I have a place to pump but it wasn’t easy.

Anyway, things may change. My DH works a different company but in the same corporation as I do. From what we can tell all the companies have the same lack of support for pumping. We were surprised because they offer all sorts of health related benefits and classes. They even have a maternity program. Well, DH is in an executive training course. One of the assignments is a group project. They have to come up with an idea to save the company (or corporation) money. The groups will present their ideas to a panel of VPs from the different companies and the corporate office. They were told that ideas from past classes have actually been implemented. Yesterday his group got together to discuss everyone’s ideas. (See where I’m going with this?) DH presented his idea for a corporation wide lactation support program. He showed them the studies that have been done that show that lactation support saves companies money by reduced health care costs, reduced absenteeism and lower turnover. His group was completely sold on his idea. So, they are now working on designing this program and getting the numbers together to show this panel how lactation support will save the company money. How awesome is this!?!?!? I’m so excited. I really hope this is an idea they see worthy of implementing. ::::

yay! thats awesome. last year i presented the idea though our company's "continuous improvement" process. they went so far as to buy a special fridge, but it died there. a woman in my department is pumping daily, though, and actually has a nice clean room to use, so i'm glad of that.

you may want to show your dh this page

Thanks for the link! Even if nothing comes of this directly maybe it'll get some people at the top thinking.

That's great! I've been trying to get a lactation room at my workplace for 3 years now and it looks like it's actually going to happen this summer!
