Fresh Cherries

I don't usually buy cherries, but they've been really inexpensive lately, and they're just.so.gooooood!!!!! Kids love them and I just adore the really tart ones myself. So I've ended up with quite a load of them, and now the newness is starting to wear off for everyone.

Now what do I do with them? Can they be frozen? I know I can pop blueberries straight into the freezer, but I don't have the slightest idea what to do with the cherries. And cheap or not, I don't just want them all to go to waste.

Thanks in advance!

ETA: How long will the cherries last, anyway, and should they be refrigerated?

They do need refrigeration. And they'll keep a week or so, depending on how fresh they were to begin with.

If you have truly tart/sour cherries, then by all means, bake them into a pie.

Otherwise, I halve and pit them, toss them with a little bit of sugar (2 c cherries+2 Tbs sugar) and freeze them in portions that'll be good for things like stirring into homemade ice cream, stirring into yogurt, adding to smoothies, etc.

But then, I've also already made cherry jam once this season, and once per season is my limit. I do one batch of jam and then freeze the rest.

De-seed then pop in freezer. SOOO good even all alone. You can make into a smoothie too. I love fresh cherries. :
