The Lord had put making a newsletter for Christian families on my heart. I also felt drawn to ask like minded ppl that I know to contribute articles too, in order to give it some variety. I really think that MDC ladies would have much to offer, as far as articles, since many of the topics I am covering, are covered here. I have a lot of topics, some I am heartily into, and some that I could use more experience. That is where the other writers come in of course. No one wants to read a newsletter with just one author, well maybe some might. But, that wasn't my goal.
So, I have my first newsletter all done (and half of my 2nd, although they are done every 2 mos), and I made some small booklets that is a sample issue (the articles are cut down and it gives info how to get issues and order a subscription, about me, my mission, and a blurb about how to get free issues by submitting articles, etc). I mailed out full newsletters to the two writers that contributed to this first issue. Then, to a few IRL friends that I knew would enjoy it. I made 20 booklets, and put a couple in the PT, ER, and lab waiting room at the hospital, and I was thinking that it would be okay to put them in dentist, drs, ER waiting rooms, etc. I was also going to pin them on community bulletin boards.
I also read somewhere here where I am eligible to put things in the WAHM trading post and that kind of thing here. It says the posting is free for a month, or I can buy some time to put my newsletter out there here for others to see. But, no promoting HERE, of course. (notice I did not name my newsletter)
My question is; HOW do I promote my newsletter without annoying people? I am only wanting to break even with subscription prices. Ppl get free issues if they give articles, so I have that option for those that can't afford a full subscription, but still are interested in the content.
Oh, and I did put order forms in the envelopes, and a cover letter telling my contributors and friends/family more about the newsletter, and how it would help me if they could copy and give out the order form for others if they want. Or, if they got the newsletter for free, and didn't like it, to pass it to someone who would.
Do you know how one goes through the mail system to give out flyers or my sample issues (but by my calculations, the sample would cost me .70 each including postage). Or would doing only flyers be the better idea? I asked my husband about flyers on windshields at the health food store or whatever, and he said that would be annoying. I get that.
Any ideas? This isn't for profit, just to break even, so I have to conserve money right now that I don't have paying subscribers.I pay for the free issues sent to my contributors, and the subscription rates are really barely enough to cover my OOP cost. I think I need to ask my PO lady about bulk mail rates, or if I can send them media mail. Kymberli
