Hair

This is kind of embarassing to ask but I need to know. DD turns 5 next month and recently I've noticed thick black hairs growing in the top of her butt crack (for lack of a better way to put it ). I don't know what to think of it as DS is 7 and doesn't have it. It seems like a silly thing to call the doctor about but I'm wondering if I should bring her in for a check up. She's always had fine body hair covering her body.

I'm concerned about precocious puberty as she is a big girl, as in really tall. She is about the same height as her brother (approx 50 inches tall) and she weighs almost 60lbs; but she has been thinning out a lot lately but has become very curvy. I developed early and started my period when I was around 9.

Thoughts?

I would ask her doc about it. My niece had a ton of hair on her back when she was born, and I remember that they were sort of worried about spinal problem, but I don't remember what. Could it be that?

I am thinking that a phone call to the doctor (or phone nurse) might be the simplest thing. I don't know about your dd, but my ds is very self-conscious about certain things, and he might get really embarrassed if I brought it up during his check-up. (Not sure how to explain it... he wouldn't be embarrassed at the moment because he doesn't know about puberty, but it would get him started on a path of thinking something was wrong with him, body hair is bad, etc.) It might be better to get reassurance without her knowing, since it's probably nothing.

My DSI has a sacral dimple, and while his doesn't have hair growing from his, I understand that some do. Sacral dimples are usually noticed at birth; is it possible your daughter has one and that's where the hair is coming from? I'm kind of grasping here, but I thought I'd mention it.

My niece got a patch of thick, dark hair on her sacrum when she was about that age. She actually did develop precocious puberty a couple of years later too -- I don't know if the two are related or if it's just a coincidence though.
