I'm afraid I'm a yarn snob

I started buying merino wool yarn online because I started knitting when I lived in Hawaii and there weren't any local stores that sold wool. Now when I go to a local yarn store I can't find anything that I like. All the yarn looks so cheap. Most of it is synthetic. I don't like synthetic materials. I prefer to use natural fibers. If it is natural cotton or wool, it comes in very small balls or skeins that seem to cost less but I have to buy so many to make anything that it ends up costing me more. I got excited when I found out there was a small, locally owned craft shop that sold yarn. I went to check it out but they had the same crappy yarn as the big stores, just less selection. I can't even usually find the needles I need in the local stores because they only carry a few sizes.

It frustrates me. I want to be able to walk into a store and see and feel some yarn before I buy it (and like it). I'll come across a pattern for something I want to make. I can't find any good yarn for it at any local stores. So, I'm still just buying yarn online. I have to wait to get it in the mail. Sometimes I would like to walk into a store, buy some yarn and go home to immediately start working on a project.

Just a vent, mostly, but also a question. Does it sound like I am a yarn snob?

Yup, but don't worry, I am too There are worse things in life than buying your yarn from the internet.
Then again, I now have a LYS that has a fair selection of natural fibre yarns, so I'm now one of the spoilt ones.

Yep, I wrinkle my nose when my MIL asks me to feel her newest acrylic acquisition. Ew.

You sound just fine to me.

I mean, aside from the lack of good yarn stores. That's a tragedy.

For needles, I'd say get KnitPicks to ship you some interchangeables and never shop for them again.

Are you anywhere near Asheville? THe last day of the Southern Highland Craft Guild Fair is tomorrow, at the Asheville Civic Center (link: http://www.southernhighlandguild.org/). They'll be back in October. The Southeastern Fiber Fair is also in October (link: http://www.saffsite.org/dnn/Default.aspx). I have never been to either of these things, but you sound like you could stand some indulgence in good yarn (high level snobbery is A-OK!), and fiber fairs are the best bet.

I'm one too. I taught my SIL to knit and she just got some acrylic since it was inexpensive and she wasn't sure if it was something she'd stick with. She is and now it's just because of the practicality of it. Drives me nuts! It's not even like she really has a preference for one or the other. She just doesn't want to buy wool...even to try it out. I secretly want to switch out her yarn with "good stuff".

Unfortunately, I'm too far from Asheville. I wish I were closer because it seems to be the place to be in NC if you are at all crunchy.

I can't imagine why one would not want to try wool. Maybe if she were exposed to the soft, sumptuous wool that is available, she'd change her mind.
