hiking backpack style carrier

Thread Starter
So ds is going to be 2 in August and is already ~34lbs. We have an ergo, which we use daily, but Dp has trouble carrying "the world's heaviest baby" in it for any period of time (apparently it makes his legs go to sleep).

I am planning on still using the ergo a lot, but am possibly interested in a hiking backpack for when we need to do long journeys, or actually go hiking.

I feel like we have at least a year or 2 of lots of baby wearing/carrying left.
suggestions?

The Deuter Child carrier is the best backpack carrier I've tried. The child is not slung by their crotch but has more of a seat for their bottom like with the Ergo and it hugs tightly to your back. They're aren't cheap though.
The other 2 I've tried are a Kelty Kids and ....(can't remember the name). These 2 slung the child by their crotch and if I bent over or to the side the child moved with me which through my balance off.

In my experience though I still preferred using the Ergo b/c he was closer to my body and it felt like less weight then with the larger backpack carrier.
I would suggest going to a store and trying them out before purchasing.

Love my Deuter II and Ergo for every day use.

I have a kelty- it can be a bit cumbersome but holds the weight well and dd is very happy in it. very pricey though

we have a kelty and it is comfortable and supportive enough to wear on medium length hikes and varying terrain without a rest.

We have a Deuter II, and love it. We used it for x-country skiing in the winter, and will be going hiking in a few weeks. My husband also uses it to take dd on walks(he is scared of the mei tai). It is sooo comfortable to wear- it distributes the child's weight very evenly, and doesn't throw you off balance. It appears to be comfy for baby too- my dd will invariably fall asleep in it
