Why do people use Twitter?

Thanks for this great forum. This is my first post to the forum and I wonder what you people think.

Why people use Twitter? What motivates people to use Twitter? Any ideas? It’s about news or comments?

? Not sure if you are truly asking why they use it or being sarcastic, lol. But I have never used Twitter. I know nothing about it - but I often wonder what is so great about Facebook. I have been signed up for a year now and have been on Facebook a hand full of times. I don't get it. Same goes with MySpace. Maybe I'm just too old for it all. Plus, I never have the time.

For me it's a way to chat online with friends and acquaintances, but in a really low-key way. No one feels pressure to respond unless they are interested in what I said, because I didn't send them a direct message. I've met a few people there, too, including people who live in my town and who I've connected with in person.

Also, some businesses put specials on twitter, like iprintfromhome posts a freebie every tuesday. A pizza place near me posts daily specials, too.

when i first signed up i didn't like it

but then i discovered the search function so i can type in say childbirth and see realtime tweets about it. i find lots of good links taht way just from random people.

sometime i check their other tweets and see that they've tweeted a lot of stuff that i'm interested in so i'll follow them

sometimes i re-post the link on my facebook or blog so other people in my network can see it

also its the only thing like it my dad uses so i use it to direct message him sometimes b/c i never want to talk to him on the phone... just awkward strained relations btw us....but w/ twitter we can keep up w/ each other
