ok, so i might get flamed, but i think if you choose to eat meat, you gotta know what is going on. you can't pretend that hamburger just grows on a tree. if you know what is happening then you can do what it takes to make changes. we eat meat and i felt the polyface farm stuff wasn't bad. the factor farm stuff is nightmarish... but if you are going to eat that stuff you have to have your eyes open.
on our drive across the country we drove thru an area of texas that was full of feed lots. it was shoking the amount of cattle, the stink and the just saddness. we decided that if we couldn't find a local producer we wouldn't eat meat again.
i think that you can eat meat and still take care of the planet you just can't eat it all the time and eat it the way we produce it in so many parts of the country.
michael pollan said "eat food, not too much, mostly plants" which i think is right on.

We watched this the other night, and wow, it was amazing! We already try to buy local/organic/grass-fed, etc (we are trying to be as TF as possible), but with prices, we find it really hard to stick to that when it comes to our meat. DH has been on board for a long time, but he has not been totally convinced that we need to buy the "expensive" meat, or join a CSA for a local-ish farm that raises poultry and pork. Seeing this movie changed all of that for him, and now we're 100% on the same page!

I loved Polyface Farms. Sure, I wasn't thrilled to see chickens being culled, but there really isn't another way to do it, and it's a fact of life. I loved everything that farmer had to say, and it was really cool how it explained the role of every animal on the farm.

We'll be re-evaluating our grocery budget, and making the necessary changes to not only be able to speak with our dollars (which we already try to do anyway, but we know that we have a long way to go), but protect our family from the very scary things that go on in the corporate world of food.

ETA: Did anyone see the deleted scenes? There was a great scene with the Polyface Farms guy where he said a bunch of important stuff, but the entire time, there was a cat licking itself right behind him. I'm guessing that's why it didn't make it into the film.

Kelly the Kitchen Kop has suggested posting to Oprah's site regarding having Nina Planck on Oprah!! I'd love to see that!

Michael Pollan (Omnivore's Dilemma and Food, Inc.) was just on Oprah, so we're commenting to keep up the Real Food advocacy for mothers and babies!

Amazon is running a deal right now so you can buy Food, Inc. for $9.99!
