Making tortillas?

Who has done this? How hard is it to make them? I don't have a tortilla press.

I've done it. It's not difficult, just a bit time-consuming.

No one in my family ever used a tortilla press.

I've made them... They're a lot of fun to make if you have some extra time.

I don't have a press either, I just rolled them out and cooked them on a cast iron griddle or skillet!

... making me hungry!!!

What kind of fat do you use in them/do you use fat at all? Every time I have tried to make tortillas they have come out very stiff.

iirc, my recipe called for shortening... which I subbed w/spectrum organic shortening.

Here it is, in case you want it:

*Flour TortillasServing Size : 12

*4 cups Unbleached all purpose flour
*2 teaspoons Salt
*4 teaspoons Baking powder
*2 tablespoons Vegetable shortening
*1 1/2 cups Warm water, or more if needed

In a large bowl, stir together the flour, salt and baking powder. With a pastry blender, a fork or your hands, gradually work in the lard or shortening until it is all incorporated. Add enough warm water to make a soft but not sticky dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead for 5 minutes. Divide the dough into 1/4 cup (3 oz) portions and form them into balls. Roll each ball into a flat round about 6 inches in diameter and 1/8 inches thick.

Heat a large heavy skillet over medium high heat. Place the tortillas one at a time into the dry hot skillet; cook until brown on one side, then turn and brown the other side. Remove from the skillet and keep warm in cloth towel.

Note: I used my food processor to quickly 'cut' the shortening into the flour mixture.

We've made them a couple times. We really like them, but I don't make them more often because I hate rolling things out. Next time I make them though, I think I'm going to try to squish them between two plates. Kind of like a tortilla press, but without buying something extra to store in my kitchen.

For the fat, we use lard. It makes them really yummy.

I don't have a tortilla press, either. I found them very easy to roll and so worth the effort. I just use vegetable oil.
