Best yarn to learn on?? (knitting)

I am learning how to knit. So far I'm not very good, but I am blaming it on the yarn. I just got some yarn from Walmart to learn on and it falls apart! : So I am making a trip to the craft store today, what kind should I get? Feel free to talk to me like I don't know anything about this (because I don't!).

Thanks sooo much!!

What was the brand type you used? I use the cheap yarn like red heart and lions brand and have had no issues, but phentex another chea brand falls apart for me.

What are you planning on knitting? If you go to a wool shop and explain that your a beginner/show the pattern they'll be able to find the best suited wool/yarn for your project.

I am not really planning on knitting anything right now. Just to learn how to do the stitches. I think the brand name was something like lion's brand.

For no specific project I would just go with Red Heart or Bernat in a worsted weight. They are pretty cheap, but I have never had an issue with it falling apart. That is no good at all!!

Avoid any of the "fashion" yarns like mohair or with eyelashes or fuzz. It will make it very hard to see what you are doing until you figure it out. Just get something very plain.

Good luck!

I think the easiest way to learn is with worsted weight wool on number 10 needles. The yarn is sturdy and the needles make it loose enough to really see what you're doing. Natural fiber is nicer to learn on than acrylic, imo, and there's some prices on 100 percent wool at michael's craft store or at knitpicks.com. A good first project is felted potholders... Small enough to be finished fairly quickly and the felting hides mistakes.

I second the wool recommendation!

I third the wool and size 10's or 10.5s. I'd also recommend some wooden or bamboo needles if you can. Not as slick, so your new stitches and hard work won't easily slide off.

Have fun!

Oh, if you go to Michaels, I believe they carry Patons wool, but it can run like $5. Look for a 40% off coupon!
