HELP! Cat(s) peeing everywhere since baby born! *UPDATE #11* - Page 2

Personally, before euthanasia I would consider trying litter retraining.

Using a dog crate/cage with a litter pan keep the cat confined until they are eliminating appropriately for one week. Then gradually expand their territory, room by room, only as long as they are appropriately eliminating.

While you are doing this, each and every area needs to be treated with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle. If the cats can smell the presence of urine they will repeat that location. So be liberal with its application.

Additionally, some cats are drawn to eliminating in the following:

Piles of laundry
Laundry filled baskets
Baskets/ large Pots /storage containers left out
Piles of Towels
Piles of papers
Rubber backed mats/carpets
Plastic bags

Personally I wouldn't leave piles of stuff on the floor at all LOL.

A long long time ago I went through something like this, and I was completely cleaning it with the wrong stuff! LOL Once I did that, and bought a dog crate at a garage sale kitty was perfect after that!

My cat both peed and pooped in one particular room once my then 3 year old daughter was given free reign of the house (baby gates taken down). Gradually, the problem spread through other areas of the house. I've found that vets do not have solutions for this particular problem - a UTI was cleared up but the behavioural problems remain. And I've tried everything - sprays, anti-depressants, multiple litter boxes, everything recommended to curtail the behaviour.

The way I manage this problem only works because I currently work at home, so I'm home most of the time, and have a backyard. I let my cat outside and tether him on a leash to a stake multiple times a day. At night, he is confined to our laundry room. All upstairs doors are shut and I keep an eye on his whereabouts inside at all times. When/if I return to work, well, I don't know what I will do. It's a terrible situation and I love my cat but it's been a nightmare.

Sigh....I've been there done that. After my son was born my house was full of cat pee . Twice my couch was peed on, any bag left on the floor was peed on, and all the wires behind our tv got peed on... u get the idea. But it didn't last forever and now 2 years later it is a distant memory. I think your cats are just reacting to the change since the baby has arrived, but hopefully they will adjust soon. My best advice is to pretty much take away/cover anything that they want to pee on and be super vigilant about keeping the litter clean. A good cat pee cleaner is a must. I recommend this do it yourself recipe. It works really well. It got the odor out of our couch completely and we still use the couch today. Good luck, I know how u feel.

One of ours is peeing in a spot in front of the computer downstairs in our finished basement. I am pretty sure it's the female (DHs cat) because when DH 1st moved into my apt after selling his & we were waiting to close on this house, she was REALLY freaked out & ruined my bed. She was the only one in the room. Then when we 1st moved into the house, before DD was born, she did it one morning in my bag that was in our room while I was sleeping. Then, still before DD was ever born, the day after the crib mattress was delivered (an expensive naturepedic), she got that too. Thankfully I got the one that has the waterproof top. But then we didn't really find any evidence of her continuing it until recently. But since we aren't always in the basement & the carpets down there got flooded once by the washer, it's hard to always tell. We happened to find a wet spot a couple weeks ago & another today. Decided it is time to replace the only carpet in the house with laminate so we can at least clean it up better.

She had been checked fully & it wasn't medical-plus just knowing her personality-it's psychological. She recently became affectionate to me which was NEVER the case. I wonder if she knows I am pregnant & is torn between being happy about it or really angry at us!

I can only sympathize & say that I can't tell you how many conversations we have had about the issue. We just stare at her & want to know so bad what is going on in her head? Why is she doing this?

We had some success with the Feliway spray in the past but it was hard to remember to keep up with it. After we get the new flooring, I would like to try the plug ins in a few areas.

We had two cats, a brother and sister, who did this after our baby was born. We had them go live at my parent's house, and they stopped it. I think they got it in their kitty brains that "in this house, we pee everywhere". At my mom and dad's, they use the litter box like the polite little kitties they used to be. My guess is, that were we to take them back here after a couple of years, they'd use the litter box again.

So maybe temporary re-homing them, for a good 6 months?

I feel for you. Cat pee is the most stinky thing ever, and cats can be so darn stubborn about it. One of our rooms still smells like it, and is going to have to be recarpeted when we get the money.
