DIY spray deodorant

While on the thread discussing natural deodorants I thought I would try to make my own liquid deodorant. I posted at the end of the other thread but decided to start a new one. I mixed together lavender EO, coconut oil, baking soda, a little alcohol and water. I don't know what is in the Weleda deodorant but I thought maybe this would work. I just made a really small amount to try it out. My ony question was what type of alcohol. I probably should have used vodka which is what I read on a few other sites. Anyone tried this?

If you want to use alcohol, you could use vodka. I like to use witch hazel, personally.

Well, my experiment did not work all. I was really stinky by noon. Almost unbearable for me. Its is so hot and humid here. I have to get some vodka so I can add more to the mixture. THe little reg alcohol I used did nothing.

I do 50/50 water and alcohol (just rubbing alcohol) and a few drops of essential oils. Maybe you need more alcohol?

It seems to. I sometimes reapply halfway through the day, but mostly just spray it on in the a.m.

How much of each do you use.

i have a small 2 oz. spray bottle that i put it in and give the 'ol pits about 3 sprays each.
it's all estimations...about 2/3 alcohol, 1/3 water and a few drops each tt and lavender eo's. sometimes i will have to spray 2x/day if it's really warm, but it's the best thing i've tried, imho. good luck!!

Tried more alcohol but its not working for me at all. The weather here is so hot and humid-90's. Really bad. I smell really bad too. I don't think this spray will work for me until the fall when the weather gets back to normal.

Generic Milk of Magnesia

I don't know if it is thin enough to spray, but I have been using cheap old generic Milk of Magnesia as deodorant, and it is working perfectly! I just upend the bottle onto my fingertips, then smooth the milky liquid on my underarms. It dries more quickly than other liquids, has no fragrance, and is magnesium, a mineral that we all need, and that many folks are deficient in.

I love that it is utterly harmless, unlike even the deodorant stone liquids, and that it works so well! I have extremely sensitive skin, and have reacted very badly to anything containing baking soda, cannot use fragrances (no essential oils for me), etc. The Milk of Magnesia causes absolutely no reaction of any kind, except that I don't smell one bit.

Can you tell I'm pretty happy with this? :

I don't know if this may be a factor in your experience, but for me, I found that it took a week or two for the alcohol spray to be "enough." It was as if there were toxins or something from my old commercial deodorant that had to work its way out of my body.

I hope you find something that works for you!

Hmnn. Yes, I do know about this but I'm not sure if this is true for me. In the winter months I can get away with coconut oil alone or if I'm in A/C. When I go outside in the in the mid 90 degree weather is when I have the problem. I've used natural deodorants on and off for years and have used them for long periods with ok results. I'm sure I have toxins but I have been eating a very healthy diet for 20 plus years-tons of veggies, whole graines, raw foods and juicing etc so I just think in this hot humid climate nothing is going to work well. I am going to try to up the alcohol content on my mix but its hard for me to stand myself at the end of the day.
If I think about it the coconut oil does work the best so far. I think I may try to mix some with some EO's to try. The spray thing sounded perfect though.

I read bergamot EO is the best deodorizing EO. I mixed up bergamot, lemongrass, and sweet almond oil with a bit of vitamin E for deodorant this weekend. It worked well out camping in the heat with plenty of physical activity. I also put one drop of bergamot on my bra where it sits under my arms (so two drops total). We had no showers, so I thought ahead and put one drop of bergamot on the seams of my nightshirt (so two drops total), also. I smelled good throughout the first day and night and next morning. We got home around noon and at some point after that I did notice a bit of a funk. DH didn't notice, though. (It was a girl scout campout and he didn't go.)

I didn't use any more of that mix because it was my starting point for an insect repellant. That also worked well and I added a thyme blend (commercially prepared) to it.

That same concept would work with coconut oil as your base, if you prefer it.

Actually, the other day I added lemongrass, TTO and lavender to some coconut oil and it worked pretty good for me. The scent was very nice. I'm going to p/u some bergamot-I've been wanting some for a while now.
Thanks for the info.
