Our guys are 5 and 7, we walk to and from school, some days they ride their bikes and I walk. We are 1 block and 3 houses from the school. Big guy wants so badly to walk to and from by himself, our compromise is that I get him across the 2 streets and he can walk or more like run the rest of the way to the school entrance. On the way home, I will let him have the house key after the 2nd road crossig and he gets to let himself in the house before me and little guy gets there.

I'm not ready for him to walk alone, maybe next year or the year after.... The one street I'm okay with him crossing by himself (just don't tell him that) but the road near the school is just too busy.

Last year I drove them maybe 3 or 4 times but that was when the windchill was way way low and also a time when little guy was sick with a fever. I told them when we moved here, rain, sun, wind or snow we would be walking to school and other than the windchill for those 2 days last year...

It depends on the kid.. one of mine is in an immersion language program, so we carpool a neighbor girl and him.. two of my other kids go to a different school and they get bussed there.. Next year, I will have one in middle school (bus presumably), two in immersion, and one in special ed (but will transfer him into the non immersion side of the same school the other two littles will be attending).. I am trying to meet the needs of each kid, but am really trying to avoid having kids at more than two schools at any given time because it gets complicated logistically. (although my oldest is supposed to start prealgebra at the middle school before school starts, and I haven't figured out yet how that will work out..)

In the morning, dp sits outside with the kids for the bus stop. After the bus leaves, he carpools the two kids to the other school. Coming home, our neighbor carpools her daughter and my son, while I wait at home for the bus to arrive with my other kids.

By car. Dh will drop off in the morning cause the school (private) is right down the street from his work and I will pick up in the afternoon. The school is about 10 minutes away.

With the wind blowing at them too! Love that saying!!

We live 2 blocks from the school and since DD1 is in 2nd grade, I walk with her and walk over after school to pick her up. When the kids hit middle school, its on the other side of town so they will be bussing there. Also our town high school is about 1 mile south of us so they will bus to there as well.

We have a neighborhood school less than four blocks from us. Generally, the kids walk to that school and then are bussed to their school from there. Sometimes we are running late (or the weather is horrible) and I drive them to the nearby school (their school is 4-5 miles from us).

If I am volunteering or they are doing something afterschool I drive.

I'm only 25 and I rode my bike 2 miles to school in 1st grade.
This year, my 1st grader will walk/bike .4 miles to school. For the first couple weeks and on MWF his brother and I will walk/bike with him since it's on our way to preschool. I will drive both of them when it is too cold/icy out for us to walk.

We are 2 miles from DS's school. It is on a busy 2 lane road with no shoulders or sidewalks, so there is no way he could walk or bike there. He also rides the special needs bus which comes right to the door, so super convenient for me.

We carpool as our neighbour's children will also be going to the same charter school which is about 4km away. There's a school bus available but I'm not sure if this will be an option when dd & ds are older. It takes me about 5 minutes by car but the school bus takes about 30 min on a good day (I've heard that it can take as much as 60min during a traffic jam). Also, there's a very busy thorough fare (6 lanes) that must be crossed to get to the school.
