Harvesting onions?

OK, dumb question time. I bought a bunch of onion sets this spring and let them sit around in my back entry for WEEKS. I figured they were gonners, but I had a big space in the garden so I planted them all (with help from my 3 yo ). They all sprouted. Yay! But I've never planted onions before. When are they ready to harvest? Now? Fall? Anytime in between? I'm in Zone 4 if that matters.

Oh, yeah. My dh insisted on cutting off some of the tops to put in his quesadillas. Is that OK?

I will pull the small ones & use as green onions/chives and I leave them until they're big & store them for the winter. I plant in May & leave them in until October.

We harvest our onions when the tops start to fall over and look like they're dying.

You can pull them at any time, though, if you're wanting to have green onions or scallions.

Cutting the tops shouldn't hurt them too much, but it might reduce the growth of those plants.
