Can I use cheapo Gerber PFs as pocket stuffers?

I have a pack of Gerber prefolds from Target from a helpful acquaintance, and I understand that they can't really be used as real diapers. But I'm sewing up a bunch of Rita's Rump Pocket diapers - could I use them as stuffers in there for a newborn? I hate to let them go completely to waste, but I think I read somewhere that the doublers in the middle aren't actually cotton, but polyester...?

Any experience with this, ladies?

Yeah, if they have the poly in them, they're not great in terms of absorbancy. Then again, newborns don't have huge bladders, so there may be no harm in trying one out. We embroidered some for burp cloths and loved them for that purpose.

They're not great, but they work okay if you change often.

I think it depends on which kind of prefold she gave you. I've gotten both regular cotton prefolds and "bird's eye" prefolds from gerber, and both were nothing but cotton and worked fine. I did get some fake prefolds second hand though with the fake stuffing inside. Those didn't absorb well at all and I quickly got rid of them.

They are nice to clean with and fit well in a swiffer sweeper for quick wet clean-ups.

they are not going to be your best absorbant choice but they will work. They also won't last nearly as long as an indian or dsq diaper. May as well use them while they last.
I used them for years before I realized how much better it could be. They did the trick.

Huh! I had no idea there were different types. These claim to be all-cotton birdseye. Maybe I'll open one up to see what the middle is made of.

Thanks, all! I guess I'll try them as stuffers and relegate them to the cleaning bag if they don't work.

Are they really thin? I have the cotton birdseye ones and use them as a little extra absorbency to add to my inserts. They work fine. No stuffing in them at all, just cotton. The ones that are thin along the sides and really fluffy in the middle are the fake variety.
