I have a few pumpkin plants in my side yard, Have a nice big fruit started, Bigger than a basketball, maybe 2 basketball size and a couple of other ones that are more softball size. Folks are telling me I should put a piece of tin, piece of plywood, pallet, something unerneath the pumpkins. Should I? Do I have to? Anyone have sucess not doing so?
Right now I could put something under the smaller ones maybe, but the big one, I look at it as a risk that the pumpkin may break off if I go lifting on it. I doubt the smaller pumpk are going to amount to a big size, well not tiny, but not BIG they are on different plants and I don't think those seeds/plants quite came true to genetic make-up.
The type of ground underneath is grass, plain old yard grass and it is oon a slight slope so it does drain.
