AAP to recommend gentle retraction in 2 years

Thread Starter
A Pediatric Urologist at a very good hospital the other day told me that in 2 years the AAP will recommend gentle retraction to reduce infection. I said that was "bs" in so many words. No one should retract foreskin. I don't agree with many things the AAP does and will not be doing that to my son. Has anyone else heard this?

When we went to our car my dd asked why me and the doctor were yelling at each other. (I kind of laughed).

I wonder what studies support this rec?

Yeah, where's the evidence to support this? They just can't leave anything alone, can they!

ETA: Why in 2 years?!? Why are they waiting til then?

I haven't heard that one. Perhaps people are finding out just how easy it really is?

Because then they can push their agenda and call any boy over two who is non retractable a case of phimosis and do the circ that they missed out on when the he was a newborn and have the AAP to back them up....is Schoen back?

: That would make perfect sense.

How does anyone know what the AAP will do in 2 years? Does this doc have a professional connection to the AAP? I would call that BS at this point.

IF I were prone to conspiracy theory, I'd say this is the most likely scenario. I'm NOT prone to believing conspiracy theories, but enough of them have turned out to be completely accurate (if not actually worse than initially suspected) over the years that it does make me wonder...

:
But still, Fyrestorm does paint an entirely plausible scenario.

It doens't say two year olds should be retracted, but in two YEARS they will rec it.

Right...but forcing retraction will cause micro tears and paraphimosis which will inevitably lead to cutting these babies because of repeated infections etc.

i'm not arguing that

so i assume bunch of parents with intact boys signed up for a study about retraction. i assume that they studied those who were gently retracted versus those who were not and followed them into adulthood in order to accurately find which group had a lower rate of complications.

well... either that or they are going to start reccommending retraction for intact boys and see if rates of infection go up... that way they dont have to waste any money on the study. but that would be unethical and they would never do anything unethical now would they?

I call BS. The ped is full of it.

There is no way I could retract ds if I wanted to without SERIOUS trauma. The kid's got some major overhang.

While I do generally agree with you that this is probably bs, it is not uncommon for medical associations to issues new guidelines every few years and to "leak" to some of their members some of the expected new info a year or so before those new guidelines are released.

For instance, I was at a meeting for "training center faculty" for our local American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) training center a month or so back. We are expecting new CPR guidelines to come out at the end of 2010. While they haven't been formally released, we were told by our regional faculty member what some of the expected changes will be. They are continuing to do research and generally know where that research is leading them.

That said, I agree with the pp who insinuated that they didn't do research on the long term outcomes of this. I doubt that they are doing continuing research on retraction vs. not retracting.
