paint on architectural mylar

i have a big roll of the stuff from a drafting print shop I used to work at many many years ago. we got it out recently and tried painting on it with kids' acrylics. the paint didn't stick.

then, we went to a nature park where they had made these gigantic tree tags out of what appears to be the same material! they were painted and sparkly, too. they are outdoors, so obviously, the paint is sticking. I emailed the park and asked, but they haven't responded.

any thoughts? the paint was streaky, kind of looked finger-paint-ish. and some of it was textured with what can only be described as a substance that looks like sugar.

thanks! my creativity is stumped.

There is a product called Cel Vinyl that is made for painting on acetate, foil, plastic, glass and other non-oily surfaces. Maybe it will work on your mylar.
