8 month old grinding his teeth. Help!

My 8 month old is grinding his teeth all day! He has 3 on top and 2 on bottom. Has anyone experienced this with their LO? What to do?? Thanks.

Oh, DD used to do this when she was a babe! I couldn't stand the stand the sound and worried that it would become a habit. Fortunately, it was a short-lived phase and she stopped doing it after a while. I think it must have had something to do with the novelty of having teeth.

Lina's 11 months and does it much less often these days. Lately it seems to be tied to teething pain somewhat.

My LO just started doing this.... it's AWFUL. Nails on a chalkboard, only right in my ear because I'm usually carrying him.

Sorry, but I have no solution.... just BTDT.

Thank you for posting this!!!

My almost 10 month old is grinding her teeth, too. Is there a way to stop it? I don't want her to get lock jaw or something from this and I definitely don't want it to hurt her in anyway. So I guess I'm wondering .. is this at all dangerous?

I can't stand the sound either! I keep finding my self putting my hands to her mouth or around her cheeks to get her to stop .. It just goes right through me.

I have no words of advice. Only to say, my LO grinds her teeth also.
She is 13 months and has 9 teeth. I am hoping that it is just a phase and it will pass.

I worry he will chip his little teeth and the sound gives me goose pimples!! My LO uses a pacifier at night between nursings. Although I hate to do it, I have started to give it to him in the day when the grinding is bad because it works and I just can't stand the grinding!!!!! Sorry ya'll are going through this too

My 8 mo DD started this a couple of hours ago. She cut her first top tooth today, and uggghhh. Awful sound. My DP grinds his teeth all night too, now I'm going to get it from both of them!

DS did this too, but it was a short lived phase

ds is 8 months with 4 teeth and recently started doing this. terrible to say but, his little face looks so cute when he's trying to grind his tiny teeth together.

But, what I wanted to say is that the second he started doing it I thought all of those thoughts about chips, habits, etc... then I quickly remembered that dd did the exact same thing when her teeth were new. She would grind them like crazy! Now, at age 3.75 the grinding habit is LONG gone and her teeth look beautiful, straight, and chip free. So, no worries. It's not some weird habit or some infant form of OCD... it's simply that teeth are such a new and fun thing that must be explored and experiemented with for a awhile.

Sounds like it might be nothing, as pp's said, but I also thought I'd throw in there that teeth grinding can sometimes be a sign of magnesium deficiency. Most of us are mag deficient anyway, whether we grind our teeth or not. If you wanted to supplement yourself with magnesium, baby would get it through bfing.

ds did this around the same age. they out grow it.

Oh, I hated the tooth-grinding stage! SCRITCH! SCRITCH! SCRITCH! Drove me absolutely crazy with my two kids. It didn't last long for either of them, though; I only remembered it when I read the question. Just wait it out and cover your ears!

Oh geez, glad it seems to be fairly normal--I found this thread through a search. My 7.5 month old is doing this now, and it is just awful!! Yuck.

Mamas, don't worry about grinding in your babies teeth! It is completely normal and something that they outgrow. Many kids that come to our clinic have "severe" wear by the time their 10years old and it's no problem. Primary teeth are also very soft so they wear pretty fast.

Very interesting. Our 4 yo DS did some grinding when he was 8 or 9 months. After that we didn't hear it but now suspect that he does it in his sleep because he has wear on a couple of his teeth. Our dentist told us not to wory about it until he has his permanent teeth. I may look into Mag. supplements.
