Life After Labor on MTV...Dr Drew and his anti-bfeeding comments....UGH! - Page 2

I'm in Canada so they haven't run all the episodes yet...as much as I am a strong supporter of BF and being informed - I just see that these girls are at a disadvantage because of those around them and our culture being so anti-BF. I see that through their birth stories and BF that what little power and confidence they could have in their mothering has been stripped away from them.

I've only seen one episode, and was horrified at how one of the moms was treated by her family...supported financially but constantly told she couldn't do anything relating to being a mother. It made me cry!

An even bigger blow to have an MD just poo poo BF....so sad.

Yeah, I was sore for awhile when I started nursing...but guess what...EVERYTHING WAS SORE AFTER HAVING A BABY!!! : My vagina was sore after birth so I guess I should have just had a c-section....and oh wait, having your body cut open will lead to quite a bit of soreness too....so I guess if you don't want to put up with ANY pain at all you SHOULDN'T have babies ever! Being pregnant can be horribly painful too!

I was wondering if anyone else had caught that. When I was watching it, my dad made his classic "oooooooooooooh snap" face and said "He just said the WRONG bleeping thing. I'll bet he didn't know he was about to incur the wrath of Rebecca's letter writing!"

My father knows me well. I'm crafting letters to MTV and Dr Drew right now. I'll try to remember to post them before I send.

I saw this and was really annoyed, I thought the Dr. was rude for the whole show, but the breastfeeding comment was just ignorant. I'm a teen mom and am still breastfeeding my son who recently turned 2 although i honestly would never admit that im still nursing him to ANY of my peers (besides my bf) because they looked at me like i was crazy for not stopping after a few months. I really hated the show 16 and pregnant, but unfortunaltley got addicted to it, because i thought it confirmed a lot of the stereotypes for teen moms especially not breastfeeding (although i thought fighting w/ their partners while holding the baby was worse). On one episode it showed a girl keep having to get up in the middle of the night and go into the kitchen to make bottles every two hours, I felt bad for her because it's soo much easier to just roll over and nurse your baby whether your a teenager or not.

UGH. I'd love to see docs like these up against people like Christiane Northrup...

Was that the one who refused to breastfeed because it would "wreck" her boobs. Her doctor made me laugh, when she sort of shook her head, and was all, "Yeah, no, pregnancy wrecks your boobs". She also encouraged her to breastfeed for at least a couple of weeks to help with immunity, which while a couple of weeks is nothing, it's still good that she was trying to get the importance of breastfeeding across.

I was actually thinking about this last night, and while I wish that these girls would TRY breastfeeding, I just see how some of them may eliminate that entirely. The last one I saw, the girl was back at college, working, and trying to have some semblance of a life. The baby daddy refused to help at all... my heart was breaking for her. My point is, they seem to have very little family support in raising the children, I just don't see them having much support in terms of making a breastfeeding relationship work. Which is sad.

Dr Drew seems to have a harsh feeling towards breastfeeding- I wonder if the formula companies have their hands in his pockets?

I don't want to waste my time complaining about Dr. Drew (the other posters have already done a wonderful job. lol) but just wanted to say 'kudos' to you...sounds like you're doing a great job. :

Too bad, but then, I don't know any teen who would seriously take advice from anyone on MTV. But then maybe I am out of touch with most teens? I dunno, maybe I am. It is sad that doing the right thing is not enough of a motivation for some people. If anything is at all inconvenient for them, then it's tossed by the wayside. Even if it hurts their children.
