This is our third week doing school. My kids are: 13, 11, 9, 4, and 2 with hopefully temporary m/s in tow
We have had a great 2 weeks so far. I had never done this before but this year, we started slow. (due to a car wreck & pg issues) I just couldn't pull it all together to start on one day.
The first week, we just did math and got back in that routine. My 4 yo is the only one who loves math! The 2nd week, I added science to the 11 & 9 yo ds and health to the 13 yo dd. And they started their official reading for an hour everyday. It was good because I talked to the boys to see 'when' they like doing particular subjects and they both told me. I didn't have to 'make it up' or try a new schedule. Here's how they want to do it:
??-8:30 dh will make sure they are up and chore charts completed while mom wakes up slowly...
8:30-9:30 REad for an hour
9:30-11 Math (they both hate math and are having to do 2 lessons/day to play catch-up from Hurricane Ike's disturbance last year. Also, they spend time working on their mult. and div. facts)
11-12 Science (the boys do it together and don't need my help usually. they enjoy taking their time on this because it's one of their fav. subjects)
I think this is a good start. We can tweak it along the way. And if I see they are finishing up with Math and Science earlier, they can take a break or squeeze something else in. Also, today I am adding in their Lang. Arts after lunch. (Next week, I'll add history, journaling, etc.)
We will do a 5 day week but light on Mondays and Fridays... it will be easier to have them do a full day, though, if we are home. (we ALWAYS have interruptions throughout the year and it's easier to take off for those if we are caught up or ahead a little)
My 13 yo is independent except we all do history together and she takes time to do stuff with the 2 youngest. All three of the older ones do, actually. They each have a 20 minute period where they read or do an activity with the 4 and/or 2 yo. I just haven't worked these in yet...
I'm still working on the 4 yo schedule. Normally, I wouldn't even have one. But he is insistent and hungry to learn. He is 1/4 of the way through his K Math book already and understands what he's doing. We are also doing 100 EZ Lessons. But he 'has' to do science and history like the older boys, he says, and then the 2 yo follows suit. So usually I print him a coloring page or tear something out of a workbook that has to do with what we are learning. I just can't keep up with him... haha!
Every year gets tweaked but I have to admit, this year's going the best so far...
