OKay, we got the movie a while back and dh and I have been dying with curiosity to make some ourselves.
So the other day dh got a recipe, picked up the ingredients on his way home from work, and then this morning got up early and made it.
WOW! I now feel like I could eat ratatouie continuously and not need much of anything else. But our daughters don't seem crazy about it. Our oldest said the sauce tastes okay but the dish itself "looks really gross."
Our youngest did eat a little. Then later today I made some rice to go with the ratatouie, and dd tasted a little and said she just wanted the rice, with milk and sugar, and that she liked the ratatouie but it "made her sick."
So it's possible my oldest might at least like the sauce over some things like pasta. One of her favorite things right now is pasta with just plain tomato sauce. So we'll see.
And our youngest might sometimes nibble some of the veggies. She sometimes really loves vegetables and other times isn't in the mood.
Anyhow, dh and just love love LOVE it, though dh is talking about it needing some meat with it -- or at least some sunflower seeds or something. This time he made it with zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms, green pepper, and of course onion, garlic, and tomatoes (both from the garden and also canned diced, plus some tomatoe sauce), and parsley and basil ... starting out of course with olive oil.
So what variations do you guys like? I feel like making ratatouie our staple food -- though I feel selfish doing it when our girls don't seem as gun-ho as we are. But of course we'll have other foods, too. And they will probably each eat certain parts of it. Our oldest loves tomato sauce, our youngest loves raw tomato ... so that's a start.
Now ... for a link to that wonderful song from the movie, Le Festin, and another link to the lyrics first in French, then English.
