Lactivism at the ELCA Youth Gathering!

So, I've been here in New Orleans for a week chaperoning at the ELCA Youth Gathering. The theme is Jesus, Justice, Jazz and there was a big social justice emphasis. We were talking with the kids about I don't even remember what, and somehow the Nestle boycott came up. I explained it to them and they were all "That's awful! I'm not buying Nestle anymore." And some people walking by overheard and were all "Right on!" because I guess they already boycotted Nestle.

Then when it was our turn in the interaction center, there was a "Peace Walk" that had several "paths" and this was in the social justice one:

I went to the National Youth Gathering in Atlanta in '94.

Hey cool, my coworker's daughter is there right now, and so is my daycare provider's daughter! If you see Tasha or Tasha, tell them hi!

Well, I'm home now, and there were 37,000 amazing kids, so I probably missed them.

I went to the first youth gathering in 1988, San Antonio, Rejoice in the Lord Always. I still have a video and pin that I made.

Maybe I should start a Youth Gathering thread in FYT or Spirituality.

Not following

how it's less healthy due to high cost or water as it's constitutes pre-mixed. Could've been a better poster, but right on anyway from breastfeeding bible-thumper.

Diluting formula with unclean water to reduce cost.

Most of it isn't pre-mixed. In most areas, what is available is dry - it's too expensive (heavy) to ship pre-mixed to rural areas, and it takes up more room, to boot. Using contaminated water to mix formula has been linked to all kinds of diseases (and death) in babies.

And formula is always more expensive than BM, particularly in a 3rd world country where an entire family's daily food budget may be less than a day's worth of formula would cost.
