We're continuing with Dinotopia by James Gurney.

We're in the middle of rowing The Rag Coat, so we're reading a dozen picture books on quilting, Appalachian mountain region and coal/mining.

i cannot read "the rag coat" without crying!!! seriously, i love that book. we are finishing up "chocolate soup", which my son LOVES! he honestly brings it to me asking to read it in the morning when he wakes up! it's a silly chapter book, but it's been a favorite of both kids so far. next, we'll read "the quiltmaker's gift". we've read it several times, but they love it. it's a picture book & it's excellent.

The Story of Doctor DoLittle, after which we will do Voyages of Dr DoLittle. He already read them both independently but wanted me to read them and I suggested we take turns reading aloud. When we finish we are going to do a project that we are getting excited about.

Yep, I cannot read that book without a huge lump in my throat and tears squeezing out, even though I know it annoys my girl...

Chocolate Fever
arrived last week. Oh, and I just got back from a HUGE book sale and got two huge boxes of books for just $10! I'm so psyched and trying to clear room off bookshelves for them.

We've just begun "Mr Popper's Penguins". It's a cute one that I remembered from being small.

what ages are these good for? thx!

We just finished "Naya Nuki" by Kenneth Thomasma, which I read with/to my older girls when they were smaller. Now my 8, 5, and sometimes my 3yo loved it.

We're starting "George's Secret Key to the Universe" tonight, and I'm so psyched! My 8yo is already well into the book, and I just picked up the second one as well. (They're by Stephen and Lucy Hawking).

I'm going to read the Little House books (again!) starting tonight, as well, because my 3yo won't be ready for the Hawking books.

Ooh, I can't wait to get into the George's Secret Key to the Universe book. Maybe I'll pick up the Hawking books just for my DH and I for now.

As for what age these books are for, other than the one I just mentioned, since you're reading aloud, they can be for younger kids than the typical suggested ages like 4-5 years, even if the book says it's for 9-12 ages. For younger kids (2-3), I suppose that would depend on what they are used to. Start up with short chapter books and build your way up if you're like me and just starting to read longer books.

Just got back from camping so we took a break from reading aloud. We will be starting the Little House series though this week.

Jumping in to see all the great ideas!

Our reading this week will be minimal since both girls are leaving Wednesday to spend at week at SIL's house.

I just got FIAR recently & tried reading Ping, but couldn't bring myself to do that unit (What's up with the spanking? We will have to try The Rag Coat next.

For read-a-louds recently we have been doing Little House In The Woods and the Paddington stories. Our oldest daughter was gifted with a wonderful book of all the Paddington stories in one.

I'm also going to try some books on tape once the girls get back. Last trip to the library I picked up Gulliver's Travels, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Alice In Wonderland, & Aladdin & Ali BaBa.

Right now: Charlotte's Web and SOTW Book 1.

Also some science readers once in a while.

We do a read-aloud before bed and a story or set of stories on tape/CD at bedtime. So, tonight I'll read "Little House in the Big Woods" to them, (and before that the 8 and 5yos and I will read "George's Secret Key to the Universe" while Dad plays w/ the 3yo), then after tucking in and kisses, I put on something like "Galileo and the Stargazers," etc. We have a HUGE collection of books and stories on CD and tape.

I have been surprised at times at what takes my kids' fancies...Oliver Twist was a huge hit for a long time. I have NO idea why, honestly. It's a story that makes me cringe and cry! Peter Pan was another huge hit on CD, and of course all the HP books.

(I couldn't find "Little House in the Big Woods" last night, so we read some stories from "The Childrens' Book of Virtues," and "The Childrens' Book of Heroes." I cried a lot.)

My son is enjoying the Danny Dunn books. I read one to him recently and I really liked it too.

I just finished reading to him "Nothing But the Truth" by Avi. The last 5 words of the book changed everything about what we had read. I love that!! Really made us think. This was a very different kind of book as it is a docuementary novel so the writing is all coversations and memos. It was fun to try something new.

Avi also wrote the Poppy series which we have read and they are wonderful!!

The Curse of the Shadow Plague by Brandon Mull. Its Book 3 of the Fablehaven series. Before that we read Where the Red Fern Grows. We have been so busy this summer tha we have gotten off track with our reading.

My daughter is finishing up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with DH. My son and I just finished the three books in the My Father's Dragon series--his first chapter books (he just turned four.) As soon as we finished the last one, he said, "I wish there were more books in My Father's Dragon. Can we start over again with the first one?" Now we're reading the Milly-Molly-Mandy Storybook, which is amazingly old-fashioned, but he's far more interested in it than I would ever have believed.

Our current readaloud is Interworld by Neil Gaiman. Most suitable for kids 9 and up, but my 6yo is enjoying it too.

I'm reading The Jennifer Wish by Eunice Young Smith to my 8 yo. Unfortunately out of print, it is a wonderful book about a fictional family that lived 100 years ago and decided to move to the country. When I was a child, the series (all books about Jennifer Hill's family) read like wish fulfillment books. My two older children and a number of my friends have loved these books as well. Many people love these interesting, wholesome, beautifully written and illustrated little gems and keep wishing someone would bring them back into print. The author is from my home town in Indiana, or I might not have discovered them, though the books are in high demand (sell on Ebay, etc.). Sometimes they can be gotten through interlibrary loan.
