Book recommendations for a 7yo who…

After a few years of having NO interest in learning to read, or even having books read to him, is finally showing interest!!

He’s starting the process of learning to read, and is all excited about buying books lately!

So far he’s into Goosebumps & Star Wars books. He likes some of the choose your own adventure books. He also wants to start reading (with me) the Harry Potter Books.

He likes things that are funny & gross, and scary (loves the scary stories to tell in the dark books). I think he’d probably get into some good fantasy/sci-fi type stuff, and probably some good mystery as well. He likes monsters, vampires, dragons, etc…

I’m looking for some easy books that he can start on with reading, and some good ones for us to read together.

TIA!

The Bunnicula books are funny and play with horror themes.

The Percy Jackson books are both humorous and exciting. (I love the chapter titles)

The Dark is Rising books are classics.

For fluff, everyone around here seems to enjoy Geronimo Stilton.

The Dragon Slayers Academy books were a big hit with my daughter -- they're funny, there's some mild gross stuff, and they're pretty easy to read without feeling babyish. Also, Time Warp Trio fits that profile.

If you can find Daniel Pinkwater's Werewolf Club series, I bet he'd love those! Also, the Bailey School series is about kids who keep suspecting that their teachers/other adults are werewolves or zombies or mummies or ghosts. I think it's always left ambiguous whether they're right. They sound right up his alley -- a little scary, a little funny.

Bruce Colville writes a lot of kid-friendly sort of creepy stuff too.

Roald Dahl: The Twits, Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG. These are great, and probably will fit his interests.

Geronimo Stilton can be fun, if not great literature.

Lots of kids also really enjoy Captain Underpants.

Maybe My Father's Dragon and its sequels? We really liked those.

Some kids really like Magic Treehouse. They are adventure-y, but the writing's really flat. Whatever floats his boat, though.

This is actually at the top of my list of books that I'll be ordering soon. I Neil Gaiman books and Dave McKean's art.

Clive Barker (horror writer) has written some children's books. They have amazing illustrations, but I think the writing isn't very good. My kids liked them, though, and it won a lot of awards, so maybe it isn't so bad.

Also, my kids LOVED the Captain Underpants books at that age.

This is a great resource for finding books for boys of all ages. It was put together by a very popular (esp. among boys) children's book author, Jon Scieszka:
