Singapore math question

I know that this has probably been answered before, so please bear with me. I just got my box of Singapore books. I decided to order levels 4a-5b texts and workbooks. I could start dd with 4b, but since this is a new math program for us, I got 4a too so that we could get used to the program before encountering new material. I didn't order the parent book or any other books at this time. I am good at math (self-proclaimed "best" subject ) so I know that I can teach it without the parent guides.

My question is this: does the textbook actually help any of you. It seems so sketchy in the explanations, that I think I will be explaining all of it (which kinda sucks cause dd likes to learn on her own). If that is the case, it almost seems silly to have the textbook at all. I see that the explanations are pictoral for the most part, which is good, but they never flat out say that you can just add the numerators when you add fractions with like denominators.

Also, at quick glance it doesn't seem like the books match up. Please tell me this isn't so.

We're working in Singapore math 2a right now. Our textbook matches up with the workbook, but I hardly use the textbook at all. I'm getting ready to order 1a and b for my 6 year old and 2b and 3a and b for my 8 year old and I'm not sure I will order the textbooks. The only real use I have found for the textbooks is using the problems in them for extra practice. We usually do them orally to keep the textbook clean.

Hmmmm.... We've been using SM since 2nd grade. For the last 2 yrs (4 and 5) DD has been able to self teach with the textbooks for the most part. She reads the textbook lesson silently, then I will have her do the first few problems aloud. If she "gets it" she goes on and does the corresponding workbook lesson. If I was going to drop anything it would be the workbooks since the textbooks have several problems per lesson and include reviews.

Right now we're using manipulatives to teach the concepts. Then I use the textbook to review/reinforce them once I think he has them mastered.
