Making inserts without a serger?

What is the best way to make inserts/soakers without a serger?
I want to make a stash of fitted diapers for my new baby, and have flap-out soaker pads so they dry quickly. I don't have a serger, and the overlocking stitches on my machine are not the best... I am slightly worried that they will fray, or look really scruffy. Do you think they would be too bulky if I turned and topstitched?
Thanks!

I turn and topstitch my soakers. What I do is try and keep as much bulk out of the seamline as possible. I usually use zorb and flannel, so what I do is sew a strip of Zorb to the middle of a piece of flannel, away from the edges, so that when I turn and topstitch I'll have at most one layer of Zorb being caught in the topstitching. If that makes ANY sense. It works really well because Zorb doesn't fray, so you can zig zag it into place.

does that make ANY sense?

I used a tight and wide zig zag stitch. They held up really well.

Thanks for the suggestions!

dis - that makes perfect sense! I don't know why I didn't think of it myself LOL. I think I will try it your way.

Put the fabric right sides together with one cut slightly larger than the other. Sew all the way around leaving a space to turn. Turn and sew end shut. Topstitch with a long stitch. Because one was bigger than the other, the seam is flatter.
