new to EC, w/ my 0-6m baby

How about a chat thread with a little more inclusive age-range in the title? There are a few of us who are new to EC with our young (pre-mobile) babies. Its exciting to hear how its going for other people, and I still don't know anyone IRL who does this. So... I'll start.

To recap, my little girl Phoebe was born April 28- she's 3months old tomorrow! We've been doing EC now for 3 weeks, with pretty good success, I guess. I have caught all but one poop since then (and that was a bad miss- in an unfastened prefold inside a sling, yuck!), and I can catch a lot (most) pees if I'm paying attention. We spend a lot of diaper-free time at home (she is lying on a diaper and a puddle pad, or I have a diaper on my lap/inside the sling, but usually not fastened on her).

BUT, we are still not sure if she is cuing at all for pees- I think not. I pretty much go on timing. She sometimes gets wiggly and a little fussy and then we offer her the potty and she pees. But other times, she wiggles and fusses, but doesn't want to pee. Sometimes she pees on the potty and then wets again w/in 10 minutes. Sometimes we offer the potty, she doesn't pee, and then wets a few minutes later. But, I am trying to focus on the positive- that we are catching many pees a day in the potty, and she is spending WAY less time in a wet or soiled diaper than most babies her age. I am trusting that as she gets older and more communicative we'll see more from her about pees.

Something funny she does is this shudder/shiver right before/as she pees on the potty. Not every time, but often! She even makes a funny little noise while she does it.

Out and about is not very good for EC for us. We rely in diapers, and even though I give her plenty of opportunities to potty, she rarely if ever goes if we aren't home. Oh well! I've tried potty in the car, grass/pavement next to the car, public toilet, bathroom at friends houses, tiny toilet at brother's school... none of them seem good to her. I think I am inhibited about doing it in public and in front of other people, so that doesn't help. I also put a sposie on her before I go to sleep at night and she pees a lot before morning, but I just am so tired and want the sleep (she'll often go 5-6 hours w.out nursing, so believe me I sleep that whole time!).

Anyone out there brave enough to babywear diaperless? Noticing communication about pees already? EC-ing at night? Other challenges, successes?

I'm in! Haven't read your whole post, just want to bump to get this thread going! : I am having wayyyyy more pee success these last few days...I've worn her around the house in just cloth, no cover.

No poop catches though...poop is a COMPLETE surprise to me every time!

Ok, read your post, will add some stuff.

I kept noticing she cried a bit *when* wetting - so she was letting me know about the pee, but not ahead of time. So I started paying closer attention, and experimented with pottying her every time she fussed (unless I thought it was hunger). WOW, things have really picked up! Then I was having problems with thinking she needed to pee, trying, getting nothing, then 5 minutes later, wet diaper. I started a thread here "How long do you wait". GOt a great tip to try for a minute or two, then take a break with her upright on my shoulder, then try again. Bingo! Even more catches.

DEfinitely still using disposables at night and when out (though sometimes she's in cloth as we go out, then I change to sposie at our destination). At home though, I'm using a prefold with no cover. So she gets changed with every single pee at home and I am very happy about that. (Even when she's in her rocker chair or hammock, I frequently place a hand on her diaper to check, so I notice every pee even if I don't "catch" the pee.

I am officially in love with EC now. I wowed some relatives with it on the weekend.

Poo though...I need poo help! For her first 3 weeks or so (after meconium) I caught almost all the poos, but sometime after that they became less obvious and now I have not caught more than a wet fart or two (with pee) in 5 weeks or so.

we had a great day yesterday- only one "miss" all day while at home, but two wet dipes when out (one I am pretty sure when one of them happened- she was really complaining in the car). I just can't get a handle on out-and-about yet. I think I am not paying as much attention, and she's not nearly as comfortable either.

funny about poops. I seem to just intuit when my baby needs to poop, I feel more in tune with that (though she's all over the place- will go 3 days w.out pooping, then poop 2-3x in a day). So far, we seem to catch them w/out a problem.

Well, I'm very hopeful that we'll be able to go diaperless eventually w/ pants etc. For now she's nakey-bum at home and in a cloth diaper while out.

Not sure about naked bum in the slings since they're so pretty and new, but we're definitely doing no-dipes at night. I can't say how it's going b/c I'm still waiting for the baby to finish cooking, but when he/she comes out I'll update. I hope people keep this thread going!

I jinxed myself - yesterday I caught everything except when we were in the car for 2 hours on the way home from my parents'.

Today? I just had my first catch 10 minutes ago...

I want to do naked nights because I feel pretty sure she's just peeing (sposie at night) when she wakes to nurse and naked would motivate me to do something instead of letting her pee in the diaper. But she moves a surprising amount for a 2-month-old! I'm not sure how it happens, but she ends up at various angles and whatnot...how do you keep a piddle pad under them all night!?!?

did you do EC w/ your older child? (I noticed your sig). If so, how did it go? If not, when did you decide you'd do it this time?

No, I didn't know about it, and by the time I did (my daughter must have been 9 mos or so) I knew there was no way we could try it, since I lived with my mom and she likes her house kept like a museum...white carpets and all.

I have close friends who've done it with theirs, and my midwife also talks about how well it worked for her son.

I just see it as going one step further with doing our part for the environment, and a great bonding experience. I admit I'm nervous b/c I'm very airy and I tend to "space out" and daydream...I think my DH will be better at this than I am.

I have (thanks to hand-me-downs) two ring slings and two wraps. SO, its not as bad, b/c I can wash one and still have another to wear. And breastmilk poo really does wash right out. That said its only happened once in 3 1/2 weeks. (I usually am putting a prefold in there with her, but unfastened.)

W00t W00t, I caught a big poop today! And bonus, in the adult toilet!

I really need to get on to EC out & about. I've definitely noticed she does not pee in the wrap...but that means when we're out, a few times she's gotten really agitated...I finally clued in it's *probably* a need to pee ...and then probably she does pee (in a disposable) and is upset by it.
I figure I'm lucky to have a summer infant and should take advantage and do the parking lot/grass/public washroom stuff! (and then hope that by winter her pees are more consolidated so outings are easier.). It is tricky though with a 3.5year old along. Today after swimming we were having a snack at the tables outside the pool (but indoors) and I was pretty sure she needed to pee but couldn't do a darn thing about it - indoors, and no way was I going to get my 3.5 year old to stop eating his cookie and come to the bathroom on the other side of the building!

oops, missed a poop today and it was all over the carpet, ew- she'd skootched herself off the prefold she was lying on. She's been stuffy and coughing and I think she's got a cold, and she's been pooping way more than usual, and its kind of oily, runny stuff. Poor little thing. We mostly got it up- luckily we live in a pretty old, grungy rental and I couldn't care less about the carpet, which is seriously at least 25 years old.

We're leaving Monday night for 3 1/2 weeks visiting my folks. Ordered a BBLP to meet us there and my dad is apparently really excited about the whole idea, was reading online, etc. Cool- go dad! I am so lucky w/ my parents, they are really supportive of all the "weird" parenting things I'm into, and they were into BFing, gentle discipline, etc. and even coslept with us (but only a few months). They think babywearing makes so much sense, they think the baby signs were a BLAST w/ DS, etc.

I think baby might be on the verge of trying to vocalize to us about pees, which would be so great and help me potty her at the right times! She often makes a sort of a sound WHEN she's peeing, like, a quick, "HM". I'm expecting ECing to slow down though with traveling, disrupted sleep and routines, etc.

I caught another poop today -small one. Still waiting for the big one of today, though she does skip some days.

I've run into a dilemma - sometimes it seems like I'm offering pottytunities *too often*. As in , if I offer and I'm wrong (ie she does not pee), then repeatedly do that, she could easily unlearn the cues. So I've stopped making the psss sound until she's actually peeing. But the hold position or the feel of sitting on the potty are cues too. Hrmmm.

I had her pee in the library bathroom today. We had a dry outing - walked to the library with her sleeping in the wrap, took ~25 mins because I ran into some people I knew and chatted for a while, got there, did some stuff, she woke and fussed, I sat down and nursed her then took her to the bathroom, re-diapered her in same diaper, back home....still dry! She ended up peeing in that diaper (sposie) about 1/2 an hour after getting home - DH was with her and he is really not tuned in to this EC stuff yet.

I wonder about this too. My LO definitely knows what the potty at home is for, so I try to cue if I actually see/hear her peeing. But when we are out and about, I wish cuing helped her. Doesn't seem too. Today we all went to a bathroom at starbucks- big brother peed, then I tried to pee DD... DS was washing his hands and it seemed when he turned the water on that she went for it. Much more effective than both my and DS's attempts to cue her.

Ah well.

Poops are going pretty well. At 4 months old, she's finally down to 2-4/day. We had a major poop regression a couple weeks ago where I was missing 1-2/day, but we seem to have gotten back on track. Pees, she's really good at signaling that she has peed, not quite as good at signaling that she has to go pee. Sometimes, we have a pretty good intuitive connection, and it works well. Sometimes, I ignore it and get wet diapers. I think the last week or so has averaged 7-8 misses/day. I need to renew my energy for this.

We seem to have the opposite problem as everybody else here. Out and about, we're great. At home, we have more problems. I think it's that when we're out and about, she's in the sling or being held. Then, she'll usually hold it for longer periods of time. At home, she's really working on rolling over right now and wants to play on the floor a lot. She doesn't want to be carried around and definitely doesn't want to be in the sling. She squirms/fusses until we set her down and then enjoys smiling at us and rolling over. I guess AP for us is about offering to hold her and keeping her nearby, not actually holding her. In any case, it's harder to be in tune with her when she's on the ground, so we have lots of misses.

We had one of those "just have to laugh" episodes a few nights ago. It was time for bed, and she usually poops before going to bed but didn't want to be on the potty. I nursed her to convince her to try, and she was OK nursing over the potty for almost 10 minutes without doing anything and then just squirmed and fussed so much that I had to let her up. I stand up with her, and she happily resumes her nursing secession and poops all across the bathroom! She got her changing mat, me, the bathroom floor and the bathroom rug. So, back on the potty we go. She fusses and doesn't do anything. She had peed pretty recently, so I figured she didn't have to go so I cleaned her up really well and was getting a diaper ready when she peed on the changing mat. Sometimes, you just have to laugh because if you didn't, you'd stress yourself out.

visiting my parents. EC going okay but baby likes to pee on grandpa. I think I need to get her some teeny tiny trainers (or undies and sew in some extra absorbency- enough to hold one pee), or nobody will want to hold her (though they are being nice about it so far). Its kind of chilly here so she can't just be nakey-bum all the time like at home in southern california.

I'm looking on diaperswappers but so far haven't seen anything, and the tiny undies at diaperfreebaby are still $8 a pair, yikes.

Poop all over the bathroom- EEK!

Hi Emma,

I bought the tiny undies from Diaper Free Baby for my son and they are so cute. They're pretty thick, but I think they would soak through pretty quickly with a good pee. We keep him in diapers all the time and aren't quite ready to use the underwear even though yesterday we were able to use the same diaper for about 5 changes in the middle of the day. As soon as he falls asleep for a nap, I would want to have a diaper on him and I wouldn't want to wake him to change him. He almost always wakes up wet from a nap.

But, we have used his new underwear for swimming in the bathtub. (For taking pictures) They fit just a tiny bit loose. Right now, he weighs about 14 pounds and is about 26" tall. I haven't seen underwear anywhere else that I thought would fit him. Let me know what you decide to get for your DD. I would love to have something more waterproof, but I don't want to go bulky.

My idea was to make a sort of soaker pad to tack into the crotch of the undies to catch one pee-worth... microfiber encased in cotton. I thought that would be not too bulky, easy to pull down, and even if I have to change her pants the pee won't have run all over the place and onto other people, etc. But still, at $8 a pair (plus shipping I am sure) it seems pricey, since I will need a number of them on hand- we do laundry 2-3x per week in a shared facility, so its not like I can just pop them in for a little load (guess I can do hand laundry?). But, I wonder if these "diaper covers" might work with modification?
http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/en...t-toddler.html

I find diapers all the time to be a drag with using the potty. Its a production to get them on and off. She doesn't seem to wet herself during naps (she pees when she wakes up- she's sleeping in a sling right now and I do have a prefold in there sort of under he butt just in case). At night I use a big diaper- was using sposies but now we're staying in a really rural area w/out stores around so it was a good moment to switch to a wool cover stuffed with a large prefold that I fold around 2 microfiber soakers. LOL, we live on a pretty modest income, and I'm working with a diaper stash that is all hand-me-downs and gifts, plus a small amount that was leftover from my son. Now that we're doing EC I don't want to buy more dipes since they aren't cheap either!

DD is almost 4 1/2 months, we started EC when she was 6 weeks old and we are doing pretty good, at least I think so and that is all that really counts isn't it....

We use the GroBaby AI2's at home and sposies and night and when out. We often go nakey bum at home, exspecially when we are the only two at home. Some days we do better than others, the only thing that I currently find frustrating is that she poops almost everytime she is in her exersauser. I might just not be paying as much attention cause she always has so much fun in it, then she starts to fuss cause she has dirty dipe on and is not impressed. I think that cause she is standing it also feels better then lying down.

We went to a family gathering this past weekend and everyone was interested in my potty going baby. It was so nice to be able to share this with them and not feel like a total nut case, exspecially since it was DH's family. They may have just been nice to spare my feelings but that is enough for me.

Anyway happy to hear that I'm not the only one ECing a little one.

Emma - those diaper covers look pretty cute! I wonder if they're small enough though. If you are willing to make alterations, what about just buying the smallest size of little girl training pants and altering those? I wonder if you could just sew the seams tighter and then trim. That way, the shape would be correct. Or since you are going to stuff them, they might work anyway.

I have a feeling that those diaper covers are shaped a little round for a baby without a diaper. I agree that diapers are a pain with EC, but my baby has little poop spots a lot and I need to get him in a wiping position anyway. So we're just doing the diaper thing.

Welcome to the EC board, newtomotherhood! I have been wondering about the different seated toys, whether the baby thinks they're potties or a good potty spot. So far, we have a swing and a bouncy seat and he doesn't seem to think they are potties but I can see how an Exersaucer would be nice to poop in! We have a little booster seat that he's not really ready for yet, and it does seem an awful lot like a potty. But since he won't be naked, maybe he will realize it's not. We'll see!

ironically, I guess, I just gave away ALL the old undies/trainers from my son. We never had many trainers for him anyway. I guess they might just be easier to take in, I know what you mean that the diaper "covers" might be too round, but 2T undies are definitely going to be too big. Sigh, I'm just trying to find a solution that will cost less that $100 or whatever for 3-days worth.

I'm laughing thinking of an exersaucer as a poop spot but I can see why- legs could get in on the action, etc. We don't have a seat, swing, or exersaucer, but I notice LO almost always does a pee during a car ride, so maybe it feels like a comfy potty spot for her?
