Spanish as a second language for young children

I'd like to know what other people have used and liked. My oldest son is just turning 5 now, and is still learning to read English, so I'd like something that I can start with him this fall that is not reading-based. I'd also like to avoid just-for-fun programs that teach a few words but are not useful in building up to fluency. My goal is for us to learn a second language fluently as a family, ideally within a few years so that we can then travel to a country where Spanish is spoken, as a sort of reward/goal, and then move on to learning a new language.

Sonrisas looks good for young children, but it's only a one-year course.

Sube looks good but is WAAAAYYY more expensive than what I had envisioned spending!

Doing Sonrisas this year and then Sube next year and the year after might be good, but again, much higher price than I was looking to pay.

I'd love to hear what worked for other families!

Oh, I didn't see this before: Sube makes a digital version that they recommend for homeschool parents-- you have to print stuff out and assemble it yourself, but you save hundreds of dollars. I like that better, I think.

Another option we might try is putting together a Spanish class co-op in our area. One local option already has a set curriculum that looks good.

I have Sonrisas, but have not yet used it. It's definitely written more for a classroom teaching enviroment. It also seems to assume the teacher/leader has a pretty good grasp of Spanish. I took quite a bit back in college and used it way back then while teaching in San Diego, but it is no where up to par right now to be able to teach the lessons in Sonrisas. I think I'm going to sell it.

Thanks for the link for Sube though - I'll have to check that out. We have Rosetta Stone, which I know would be more than find for my 8 year old, but still is probably a bit too much for my younger two, even if we did it together. I should use it for me though. It might help unlock the Spanish that is buried deep down in my brain somewhere.
