World Breastfeeding Week on Facebook - lactivism opportunity!

Thread Starter
Another virtual nurse-in has been planned on Facebook to coincide with World Breastfeeding Week - August 1 to August 7.

Facebook continues to remove nursing pictures and classify them as inappropriate content along with images depicting sexual content and underage drinking/drug use.

Whatever your opinion of the past virtual nurse-ins (waste of time/energy, stealing focus from 'real' bf issues - just a few of the criticisms I've seen) the fact is that they have generated massive publicity for the cause. Both the mainstream international media and the blogosphere jumped on the last 2 nurse-ins and brought attention to the rights of nursing mothers and babes.

Just change your status and your profile pic to a breastfeeding image and you're set!

Within half an hour of changing my status message to "Hey Facebook! Breastfeeding is not obscene!" I got a reply from a former co-worker who said, "Depends on when/where it's being done."

I'm afraid I kinda went off on him... He backtracked a little and said as long as someone uses a blanket, then it's "okay." But that I "would be surprised" at how many moms don't.

Yeah. It's still not obscene, thank you. I controlled myself, however, trying to remember he's a young, single man who not only has no children but probably has no exposure to BFing moms. He comes from a privileged background and was always a bit snotty and egocentric. It would be pointless to get into a Facebook argument with him.

I changed my pic too. So far only positive comments.

Mostly positive responses but I was surprised at a family members wishy washy remark- it's natural but keep it covered If I only lived closer

I joined in as well (big step for me). So far only one comment that was negative. My friend wrote 'is that your tit..ewww' to which I nicely replied 'why yes, that's my boob, but you need to learn to type It's awww, not ewww!'
