Below are the most recent data by state that I have (2004). There may be more recent or more complete numbers available from someone else.

BTW, people can see Canadian rates here (from a 2006 post-hospital-discharge survey of new mothers).

The following circumcision rates are calculated by dividing the number of circumcisions performed on boys under 1 year of age by the number of male births during the year. The source of these circumcision rates for individual states is the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project’s (HCUP) on-line data base HCUPnet. http://www.ahrq.gov/HCUPnet/ The HCUP is part of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). HCUPnet has the State Inpatient Databases (SID) for 27 states. The years covered are 1997 through 2004, however, the number of states participating changed each year. There is 2004 data for 26 states. The most recent data for Maine is 2003. The HCUPnet data only includes hospital circumcisions and hospital births.

Wow, so sad to see my state (Michigan) at 85%. Not terribly surprised though.

My state isnt listed but KY the state above me is 85% I am pretty sure that TN is right around that since I dont know anyone my ds age or even close to it that are intact :

Makes me want to move to Nevada

Am I right in thinking that Nevada has a large number of Native Americans living there?

I learned something interesting the other day watching the director's commentary for Platoon. Apparently it was popular to request a circumcision while you were a soldier in Vietnam, because it meant a week long "vacation" out of the jungle and back in civilization. I think this might be the basis for quite a few myths about sand under the foreskin or hot environments causing soldiers to need circ.

I keep meaning to ask my Dad about this...he was in Vietnam, and is intact...I will ask him tomorrow...

I can't speak for Tennessee currently, and I've never seen any statistics for Alabama either, but my personal observation is that in my generation (I'm 42) most of the guys born in big city hospitals are circ'd, whereas a lot of the guys born in smaller, more rural hospitals are left intact. I can only assume this is because the smaller hospitals might have only one OB/GYN (or one GP who has attended a few OB/GYN classes), and unless he was exceedingly pro-circ he'd see no reason for it. Furthermore, there are still families here in the deep South who do not circumcise their male children and who get very offended if circumcision is even suggested, as well as various churches where circumcision is frowned upon among the congregation unless it is medically necessary for an adult male. I can't imagine that Tennessee would be dramatically different from Alabama in these respects.

You and me both, Sister... although I suspect for different reasons. Low humidity and no grass to cut are the big selling points for me; the low circ rate is just the icing on the "desert living" cake.

In a general sense, Nevada doesn't have a large number of anybody living there, but percentage-of-population-wise, yes, Nevada has a large number of Native Americans.

I would imagine Alabama and TN have a lot in common that way as well.

FIL cuts our grass so no worries on that part but less humid would be a very good thing.

I don't know statistics, but--coming from Northern Nevada--there is a LARGE Mexican population. I don't think they are used to routine infant circumcision in Mexico.
