Has anyone seen Earth?

Hi, my DD(9) is EXTREMELY sensitive to scenes of animals being hurt or sick or dying. In fact, she can't stand when they are sad even. Thinking of taking her to see the movie Earth...is it safe?

Hmm...I'm trying to remember. I think there were a couple of crying parts, like maybe a penguin chick died or something. I really don't remember. But it was mainly cute and sweet, if I recall. I've seen the Planet Earth dvd's and lots of nature documentaries and it really wasn't much of any new footage than I'd seen before. I don't think they showed anything gory, though. That might not help you much, since I can't remember. Sorry.

thank you!! She really really loves animals so I think she would enjoy it but she gets sooo sensitive about that stuff. I guess maybe if the funny and sweet stuff balances out the sad bits....

NO! Don't go!!

My 8yo is SO tender hearted, and this movie about killed him. There are several brutal scenes in which a cheetah or wolf or lion rips the throat out of an animal that's trying to get away. I really really regretted taking him to it, honestly. It's an absolutely beautiful movie, and I loved it for myself, but it broke my child's heart.

ETA - I forgot the worst part! A polar bear that the movie follows for several scenes is gored by a walrus, and then just lies down and dies. VERY sad!!

I wouldn't take her. I remember watching the documentary detailing how they made the movie and they talked about wanting to go in and help the animal being chased or harmed, but that it's nature. It's not gory, but it shows what happens in nature.

Uh, yeah sorry, Dr. Worm. Listen to the other posters, not what I wrote. I just didn't remember that those parts were from this movie, since I'd seen those scenes before in other documentaries. Sorry.

Oh I would HATE to be filming that...it's like those nature shows on tv...she loves animals so much but usually the shows are soo horrible. They should put a disclaimer...WARNING if your child loves animals, please turn off this show...the cute little bear they have become attached to is about to be brutally murdered.

I remember a few years back, her aunt and uncle gave her a video of Koko and the kitten..oh, it looked so sweet and innocent...this gorilla loves this little kitty and DD is loving the story...TIL THE KITTEN IS HIT BY A CAR.

Sorry for the rant...I just wish animal shows could not be so horrible.

Whew, I would have felt so bad if you took your DD to see it because of me. I shouldn't have said anything unless I really remembered.

Yeah, I'm pretty sensitive about animal stuff, but more when they die because of humans. Like if an animal chases down and eats another, doesn't bother me in the least, really, that's life and nature. But seeing a polar bear drown or starve because of the melting polar ice caps? I cry. It's also interesting how they film these. If they show the story from the polar bear's side we're always rooting for them to catch the seal to eat or the cute cubs will die. But if the story follows the seal family, we want them to get away from the polar bears. It's just funny, I guess. DW and I love nature/animal docs, but I guess we won't be watching much of any til our future kids are older, except maybe Blue Planet- Seas of Life. Those are just beautiful and tame.

It wouldn't have been your fault at all!!! You did warn me about the chick dying..that really would have been all it took to upset her anyway.

I know what you mean...it is worse about people..at least with animals killing other animals it's instinct but to see what we do to them..it's horrible! Are the Blue Planet shows available on dvd??? I would love to find DD some HAPPY animal shows like that to watch.

There is so much beauty and tenderness in nature-would it really kill them to make a documentary about THOSE moments and just skip over the catch-and-kill-my-prey moments? My six year old LOVES animals but I could never in a million years take her to see Earth. They should make an Earth Jr and just have it be pleasant happy cuddly fuzzy stuff.

I was going to say the same thing. My daughters were a upset by the animal killing, and also, we had seen a fair amount of the footage on the Discovery channel Planet Earth series.
