Which fish oil?

Nina Planck recommends it, as does Natasha Campbell-McBride. But I'm confused as to which brands are good/better/best. I already take Blue Ice FCLO, but this would be for the DHA. I'm prego, btw.

well i used to like NN until I read more about it.
CLO does have some DHA. I did just see that new chapter is now carrying a fish oil in capsules from wild salmon maybe look at that brand. I like new chapter everything is organic and good quality

I just take CLO (Green Pastures) everyday and then eat wild salmon once a week for dinner (thank you Trader Joe's!).

Anyone use any other brands? I think Carlson's was mentioned on the WAPF pregnancy thread. Is that okay? I'd love to find something relatively low-cost I can get at the HFS (as opposed to ordering online). Or through Frontier would be even better.

what did you read about it?

I use Vitacost.com's store brand, which is called NSI. Very good price. I have had problems with mild depression, and fish oil in high doses makes a significant difference for me. I have also read that it's very important to get enough EPA and DHA, even when not pregnant, and CLO has nowhere near enough. The recommended amount for EPA and DHA is weight-dependent, and I have completely forgotten how to figure it up, but for me it's about 3000 mg per day.

I used Vital Choice's salmon oil for a while, until I tallied up how many I'd have to take in order to get enough EPA and DHA... :

Synthetic vitamins added. Maybe something else too?

Yes the synthetics.

Crap. Synthetics? Really? Stink. I've been taking those. Will check out that link for wild salmon oil.
Hmmm....this link to a NN press release seems to say that they are 100% natural with no synthetics.
That press release is 2 years old.

This article is from April 30, 2009, written by David Wetzel from Green Pasture's (Blue Ice CLO.)

Quote:
To summarize my findings, all the factories were engaged in industrial processing of cod liver oil, which involved alkali refining, bleaching, winterization and deodorization. Each of these steps, especially the deodorization, removes some of the precious fat-soluble vitamins, especially vitamin D. The resulting products can be divided into four categories.
Quote:
The third type is the fully cleaned and deodorized cod liver oil with synthetic vitamins added back in. Most of the cod liver oils on the market fall into this category. (You’ll need to check with the individual manufacturer to verify whether their cod liver oil falls in this category.) These vary in dose from about 1100 to 4600 IU vitamin A per teaspoon and 180 to 460 IU vitamin D per teaspoon. One company, Nordic Naturals, now adds supplemental vitamin D to their Nordic Naturals Vitamin D brand, to compensate for the vitamin D removed during processing.
Quote:
With only one factory still engaging in the relatively expensive process of adding natural vitamins back into processed cod liver oil, it was easy to see the handwriting on the wall. The odds that this factory would soon fall in with the others and start adding synthetic vitamins instead of natural ones were great.
*snip*
As predicted, the factory in question ceased using natural vitamins early this year. When my current stock runs out, this relatively natural high-vitamin cod liver oil will no longer be available.
You should read the whole article, it's very fascinating.

According to the WAPF Shopping Guide, the "best" sources are the high vitamin FCLOs you can buy from places like Green Pastures, Dr. Ron's, Radiant Life, Azure Standard, and Natural Health Advocate.

The ones with a "good" rating are "Processed cod liver oil and fish oil with natural or synthetic vitamins in the right proportions - 10 or fewer units vitamin A to one unit vitamin D, and with at least 2,500 IU's of vitamin A and 250 IU's of vitamin D per teaspoon." These include: Carlson’s soft gel cod liver oil 1,000 mg capsules; NOW double strength cod liver oil capsules; Sonne’s cod liver oil; Twin Labs cod liver oil; Polar Power wild sockeye salmon oil; Vital Choice wild sockeye salmon oil

HTH!

Yes, and they're currently updating that for 2010. All of the sources under "best" are selling the same CLO by Green Pastures so the sources are largely for "comparison shopping" purposes. For me personally, the most beneficial purpose was to know what differentiates "best" from "good" and that's the use of synthetics and/or vitamins not being in the correct proportions.

I'm getting confused. I know about the problems with cod liver oil, and I only take Green Pasture's FCLO. But I would like to take FISH OIL to supplement EFA's. Are there any safe brands? I thought fish oil was not a good source of vits A & D, so why would adding back synthetics be a problem there? If it does not say anything about A or D being in the fish oil, then does that mean it's probably okay?

Sorry if my OP was unclear. I would like to know about FISH OILS that anyone takes or knows about. Thanks!
Thanks for the updated article. I did notice that mine was old and wondered if that was part of the issue. I might check out getting some salmon oil from Vital Choice. I am also looking for fish oil. I take fermented cod liver (cinnamon tingle!) and am very happy with that but, I'd like a fish oil supp too so that I can cover my DHA/EFA. It is tricky to sort out the cod liver oil info from the fish oil info.

Agreed!

So, does anyone know anything about a safe fish oil source besides the suggestion of Vital Choice?
I don't, sorry. I feel the same mental/emotional boost from CLO & I make sure I eat a lot of wild salmon, sardines, anchovies & herring.
