Garlic for a Yeast Infection??

I am still pregnant and I have a yeast infection. My MW wants me to use a needle and thread and put it through a clove of garlic to make a tail and then use the clove of garlic like a tampon. Has anyone else ever heard of this remedy for a yeast infection during pregnancy? I am miserable from the infection and I am willing to try anything. I was just wondering if any of you have ever heard of this or used it before. It sounded totally crazy to me when she told me today

I've tried that remedy (just one time), and although the itching did subside after 12 hours or so, when I took the garlic out there was a bloody discharge with it. I don't know if the garlic irritated tissue that was already irritated, but I didn't replace it with a fresh clove (like I had intended), and I went and bought some Monistat.

Also, after several hours of the garlic being in there, your mouth will probably start to taste like garlic. It travels through your system.

Did you use the monistat while you were pregnant? I read that it is not safe to use after the first trimester.

ive done the garlic but if you have a really raging yeast case, ide go for monistat. it is fine for pegnancy. you can actually save yourself some money and get athletes foot treatment. same ingredient. works well. the garlic burns a little too. it also takes longer to get rid of the yeast, in my experience.

I would worry about using monistat when you could birth any day. I mean.. the chemicals in it getting on baby's face would freak me out.

HOWEVER, I was told by my CNMs to use monistat in the middle of my 2nd trimester, so I know they consider it safe.

Anyhow, good luck! At this point I would probably try the garlic instead.

I have used garlic in pregnancy and did find some relief. It took longer than a week to see much improvement for me and it did not burn that much at all (compared to an herbal suppository I used before that, talk about pain!) It didn't work quite as well as I'd have liked. I wrapped it in gauze and used two cloves at a time, cut with a knife to release the juices more.

Externally, it helped with the unbearable itching/burning if I put coconut oil on the skin and the regular antifungal cream (OTC) was helpful, too, though I used it externally instead if internally. By using the two remedies mentioned below, I didn't need an OTC medication in the vaginal canal.

I have found tea tree oil suppositories very effective, you can find them in a health food store. I found that putting them in the freezer first to get the oil solid made it easier to put in the suppository. And, no, the burning did not bother me at all. It was mild, (like an analgesic) not painful, and felt good on the infection.

I combine that remedy with taking a special probiotic that delivers good bacteria (two strains) designed specifically for the vaginal tract to that area, called Femdophilus. You take it by mouth, but it travels in the body to the vaginal tract. It's more effective than douching or eating yogurt b/c they only contain bacteria for the small/large intestine people usually recommend (acidophilus). Increasing the right kind of bacteria in the vaginal tract helps to control the yeast growth and assist your body in balancing out the imbalance of too much yeast and too little of the right kind of bacteria.

I wish I'd known about that supplement sooner! I take two a day when in the midst of a full-on infection and one a day to keep them at bay. Some of my pregnancies I seem to be more susceptible to them than others and these things helped immensely.

Hope this helps and you find some relief soon, esp. since your baby is due so soon!

I had yeast throughout my last pregnancy. I tried everything, including the OTC creams. The only thing that worked for me was boric acid. My midwife suggested it. I bought empty gelcaps at the health food store and the boric acid at the pharmacy. I filled 12 capsules and used one in the morning and one at night for 4 days. Then I skipped a day (per the instructions my mw gave me) followed by two more days of morning and night doses. Cleared it up like that (snaps fingers.
