Spotting

How common is spotting early on in pregnancy? I'm 17 dpo today and woke up with a tiny bit of brownish spotting - mostly when I wipe, but a bit also made it onto my underwear. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

I've heard it's pretty common, but I know any spotting can be worrysome. Thinking of you Mama.

It can be perfectly normal. With DD, I spotted before my BFP, after my BFP, and a bunch of times through the first trimester. I actually spotted enough that they gave me an early shot of Rhogam.

Brown spotting is the best kind. If you have a lot of bright red spotting or clots, you'll probably want to talk to your OB or midwife. You can still have red spotting and be ok, but it could also be a sign of something wrong.

With all three of my pregnancies so far I have had spotting, and with my older girls, I had full on bleeding at least once in each of their pregnancies (and they are tearing apart the house right now). You would think that would ease my fears when i wipe and have the smallest bit of brown streaking, but it doesn't.

jenfl brings up a good point about Rhogam. If you know your blood type and your SO's, then you can assess whether getting the rhogam shot would be prudent.

I think its always good to get your levels checked when you have spotting. If for nothing else but peace of mind. I had spotting and my bloodwork showed that my progesterone is really, really low and I need to take supplements three times a day.

Just remember, spotting is not uncommon. So just because it happens doesn't mean anything is wrong. *hugs*

Another spotting success story here: when I was pregnant w/ DS (now 2.5) I spotted nearly every day for the first 5 weeks or so. Although everything was fine, it was SO stressful. Good luck! I hope it's nothing. Hugs to you.

Jeesh - ya just never know. My first two pregnancies NO spotting. My third, started spotting in week 7. Baby was fine, they told me was some left over implantation blood they could see packed away on ultrasound. It went on for two weeks and then stopped.

Fourth pregnancy a couple months ago - spotting wasn't good - started brown, within a day or two it was full on miscarriage. First thing I did when I saw brown was go to CVS and take another pregnancy test. It was NEGATIVE - after being pregnant all week long about 5 days past missed AF, I just wasn't pregnant anymore. :-(

So, maybe take a test or ask doc to take your levels......

If it is low progesterone they can help with that if you believe in taking supplements anyway. And you might just find out that all is great and no action is needed too!

Thanks everyone! It seems to have stopped (for right now), so hopefully it stays that way and it was just some left over implantation or something.

I'm spotting red, with some cramping since yesterday afternoon. It started with diarrhea (sorry!) and then with the spotting. The cramping is a little better, but still spotting. - a little on my pantyliner but mostly there when I wipe. Temp is still high, and I just took a test and its the darkest positive I've seen yet.

waiting and wondering really sucks!
