Critique A Blog ~ Freefromitall

Thread Starter
She has two blogs. Free From It All Now and
Write On - My attempt to motivate myself to write more

As always, here are the generic questions, but freefromitall may have more specific ones for you!

Blog Critique Questions

1. What do you think of the layout? The number of columns? The colors?
2. Does my profile info read well? Does it help readers 'know' me?
3. Is the writing interesting to read?
4. Should the writing be strictly educational, or include personal posts to add some personality?
5. Is the content worth coming back for?
6. How can I bring more traffic?
7. How can I generate more comments?
8. Is there something that you feel would take my blog to the next level?

Perfect timing! lol I just put up a new layout on my main blog.
I have to admit, with the second blog? I was hating what I was writing. It was all so....teen angsty...that I took a break.

But I would LOVE to hear feedback on the main blog (freefromitallnow)

(on free from it all now)

i like the proportions of the layout and the readability of sans serif text. it's a bit cold and bare - i'm not so sure it reflects your personality. i know you said you just changed it, so i suppose you'll still be tweaking it. are you going to customize your banner? do you ever include photos? i think a human touch would be nice.

your profile/about is mostly history, with just a teeny scrap of who you are right now (unemployed nursing student, right?). is that how you define yourself? as i was reading your posts and trying to get your 'essense' i was reminded of these joanna newsom lyrics: 'i wasn't born of a whistle or milked from a thistle at twilight; no i was all horns and thorns, sprung out fully formed, knock-kneed and upright.' i get a sense that you are sharp (both as in smart and as in a barbed sense of humor), maybe a little overly critical of yourself, trying hard not to look like you're trying too hard. independent - neither a leader nor a follower. a little sarcastic, someone who deals with pressure/tension by trying to make others laugh, but only at the situation or at yourself, not at others because you are loving and kind at your core.

if i'm way off base here, then show us who you really are! otoh, if this is you, or a few facets of your personality anyway, then embrace what you like and chuck the rest. i'm confused by your screenname, but if you want the internets to be your therapist, then by all means, divulge. give us your worst, pepper it with f-bombs, but it has to be funny - and real.

what does 'free from it all now' mean to you? tbh, coming from a mdc mama and with the name, i thought this was going to be a blog on simplicity. in general - the look, the blog name, your screen name, they don't tie together for me. i don't actually know what your blog is about. do you? it's okay if it's just a personal blog about your life - that can be a really good read - but then the elements of the blog need to represent you.

you're funny. you made me laugh a lot. my favorite was worst. moment. lately. and i like that you throw in some lighter goof-ball humor to mix things up.

i think the timing was unfortunate, actually, since the blogher10 sponsorship post is sooooooo long. it realy dominates the page, it's off-putting and even when you scroll down it's like - it's still there. consider editing that post to give the gist of it briefly (like a few sentences) and link to your tab since it's a duplication of that post (right?). some of the posts go on a bit . . . i'd work on keeping it a little snappier, except when you have something truly hilarious enough to merit a longer post.

as an aside . . . no tv? watch tv online. hulu.com. they have lots of kid shows. my kids love felix the cat, boo, and astro boy.

I took your suggestion on the blogher post. I cut it off just before the "services" list. Which cut about half of it off.

I'd say that you pretty much nailed who I am, heh. I do have a hard time with "About" sections and went sans one for almost 6 months, because every time I sat down to write, it was like "But...who AM I??" It is a personal blog, there's no real goal to educate anyone or anything. Just me running my mouth.

Freefromitallnow came from when I returned from a bloggin hiatus (I used to have a blog that was titled "ThePsycho Babble's"
Basically, it came at a time when I was (trying) to shuck a LOT of negative people from my life, and make a lot of more positive changes. (I guess I could put that explanation in my about, couldn't I? heh) I tried blogging under the s/c freefromitallnow....but it confused a lot of people who had followed my last blog. lol

I am debating getting my own domain name, in which case I'd go back to thepsychobabble, thereby confusing everyone again. 'cause that's how I roll.

Your suggestions were/are helpful. I'll get cracking on a better About section, and I'll keep fiddling with the template.

The layout seems to be a work in progress? doesn't seem to fit the snarky tone that you hold throughout the blog.
Your writing can be quite entertaining.
I am with pp, what is the blog about? maybe a bit more of a focus? I have been thinking about that a lot with my blog as well... a focus of some kind, some kind of unity OR a title or something that lets you know that these are more disjointed pieces of my life so don't look for a unifying thread kind of idea kwim?

ojazzy, your link doesn't work. blogger says 'blog not found'.

Thanks... I will fix that.

Fixed.

It looks like you are in process with the ads on the left?

I like your blog and I like the pic of you and your bio. It is really easy to navigate and find what I wanted right away. I like that. Nice job

I like the clean layout, but like pp, I think it's a little impersonal which makes it a bit of a mismatch with the content of your blog. It may just be the color scheme: blue and grey are two very cold colors. (Nice, but cold.)

Your photo is great. The lighting and your pose make me feel like you're there in the upper corner watching me read.

I love your writing and your sense of humor. Your personality really comes through in your posts and your "who am I page," is wonderful in its honesty. Reading that really had me hooked.

My only suggestion is filling those sidebars with lots of stuff so they'd be nice and long. I'm just kidding.
