He has some that are very bad and they have decided to use general anaesthetic and do all 12 in one shot. DS has had GA many times (7 so far), so I am not too worried about that part.
But, when I asked how I can prevent further cavities from developing since DS still has 6 more months of chemo to go through they recommended a floride rinse 2x per day. I don't want him getting any more cavities, I also know that floride is considered bad though I don't have the facts on why. So, please enlighten me on the pros and cons of floride. I'll take any other suggestions to protect DS poor teeth too. DS does spit out his toothpaste, but who knows if he swallows some too. Thanks.

Check out Xylitol! My DS had severe ECC, plus what wasn't crumbling on its own he would fall or smack his teeth and broke them, cracked them etc.. His ped dentist wanted to do 4 extractions, 2 root canals, and 16 fillings, he was only 18 months.
I'll be honest with you, that was the day I really learned how to pray. The dentist did not have immediate access to an operating room so my mom and I had approximately a year to do something/anything we could to reverse the ecc...if we could.
Then my mom discovered Xylitol and homeopathic cell salts for dental health and the rest is history.
We began using Spiffies wipes
www.spiffies.com, just wiping his teeth and gums.
Then mom got the chewing gum and candies, a spray, and finally the crystals.
www.zellies.com;
www.xlear.com;
www.epicdental.com;
www.emeraldforestsugar.com and after being extremely diligent and vigilant my mom and I felt we were seeing a difference.
We got a second opinion, this dentist could not find any of the little cavities the first had noted [we had the records and xrays, they were definitely gone]! However, this guy also wanted to extract the 4 upper front teeth and I was totally against that.
We continued giving my son the homeopathic cell salts for strong teeth and bones [
www.elixirs.com] and Xylitol. Between the two... Anyway, Trenton fell and broke the root of one of his front teeth and for the longest time - almost 2 years we were able to keep it from getting and abscess until he bounced and hit his tooth again and developed quickly a draining abscess that wouldn't go away.
Our 3rd dentist gave him nitrous oxide [not sure of that spelling] pulled the tooth and filled one large cavity and that was it. He has been cavity-free since then.
We've been making his toothpaste from Tom's of Maine fluoride-free Strawberry mixed with Xylitol, and it has worked great, but someone noted that it had SLS in it, which isn't really good.
Well mom was at it again searching for anything Xylitol. She found a site that has Xylitol lollipops and caramels on it [
http://www.drjohns.com/products/xylitol-candies/] - ordered some of those and then she found a kids toothpaste with 36% Xylitol in it and no SLS [
http://www.xylitolnow.com/Tooth_Builder_Toothpaste.html] - ordered some of that.
What I am trying to say is there are all sorts of things we parents can do to care for our kids. READ the information on these sites first, inform yourself, ask questions, then when you've settled things in your own mind, ACT on it!
Hope this helps! God bless.
