how much room do i need to allow for expansion when freezing in glass bowls?

Usually it's about an inch for a quart. If your container has a narrow neck (like a jar), then you may want more to prevent breakage. But if you're freezing in bowls that are either straight sided or flaring out, an inch or so should be plenty.
