I just stumbled across the issue of how mercury vapors are released when "silver" fillings are replaced. I wish I would have known this a year ago! When my baby was 6 mos. old I had a cracked silver filling removed and replaced with a resin filling (or whatever the tooth-colored fillings are called) and then when he was 10 mos. old I had tooth pain and had a silver filling replaced with another silver filling. These were removed with drilling and no special precaution in regards to mercury or mercury vapors. I probably breastfed him about 2 hours after each procedure and I'm still breastfeeding him now (he's 13 mos. old).
In addition to these fillings being removed, I also grind my teeth at night due to my jaw growing down instead of out - so my alignment is all off. I've been doing this for about 6 years now, so I assume that I am increasing the amount of mercury being released from my silver fillings (I have 8 total).
I'm a nervous wreck, I cried myself to sleep last night thinking that I've harmed my beautiful baby boy. What are the signs of mercury toxicity? He's happy, healthy, no known allergies, just slightly sensitive to cow dairy that I eat but he seems to be outgrowing that. He's only received the Prevnar vax but we aren't planning on continuing with that vax or any others. He's babbling but not saying any recognizable words yet. Should I be worried about him? Or myself?
