burpy baby

Ok, I posted something a while back and maybe since I wrote too much about it regarding my burpy 4 mo, no one responded...I'll try to keep it shorter.

Does anyone else have a REALLY burpy baby. I am pretty sure its related to a very overactive letdown, and I had same thing with ds1. But seriously, he is constantly needing to burp, he is a spitter (just like ds1) bigtime, and the part I'm struggling with is that he gets awake because of burping needs...

Maybe sleeps a half hour, then starts fussing, I pick up, he burps, tries to fall back asleep and I end up feeling like I am putting him to sleep all day and night long. I am really having a hard time and taking it out on my dh and ds1, and wanting to hand ds2 off and just leave - :cry.

Am I alone in this burpy baby/waking thing? Anyone? I don't expect much advice, because I can't think of many choices that completely work for us now, but knowing I'm not alone would help.

I have no advice, but you're not alone. My baby is also full of air. She gulps and slurps and drinks really fast. She often wakes up trying to pass gas in either direction! It seems like it is getting better, in that she can get the air out with less help from me and sometimes goes back to sleep on her own. I'm hoping it will just continue to get better as her stomach gets older.

I am sure you are doing this already, but at night I just hold him upright after feeding him for a while and pat him and sometimes he gets out more burps than I would have guessed.

What about those gas drops? Haven't used them myself, but I have heard they are not actually absorbed so they are not too bad.

What has the ped said? Could it be related to some kind of reflux?

I don't know...just thoughts... and hugs!

I also have a very burpy baby. She is 6 months and it is getting a little better. I am so jealous of other moms that just nurse at night and then roll over to go to sleep. If I do that she is up in 5 minutes needing to burp. I don't have any advice, just that is seems to get better as they grow older.

We have a burpy baby, too. We always hold him upright for 20-30 minutes after last feeding before bed. I noticed that when his is in his Bumbo chair, he burps a LOT immediately after being put in it. So we have started burping him in that position. Just sitting upright in my lap (even though he now has good head control, I still support his neck to make it more comfortable, especially since he's asleep usually when I do this) - as upright as possible with a little pressure on his tummy -- when I started doing this I was *amazed* at how many burps came tumbling out. Much more effective burping position than any other we've tried.
Also, our LO has just recently started rolling over and sleeping on his tummy and he will stir, burp really loud, and immediately fall back asleep. He could never do that when sleeping on his back. Whenever he had to burp on his back, he would wake up crying and need to be picked up and then be fine as soon as he burped. So, hopefully, your baby will find his way to his tummy soon and maybe that will help alleviate all of the picking up/burping/putting back down to sleep?
Hang in there!

ETA: We also use the simithicone (sp?) drops regularly every day-it breaks down gas into smaller gas bubbles - a must for us!

I'm struggling with a very gassy newborn too. Seeing the lactation consultant on Monday to see if there's something wrong with his latch that I'm missing. Just thought I'd lend some advice about the night-time burping for the bed sharing mommies. I saw a picture in an old copy of Sheila Kippley's "The Ecology of Breastfeeding" when I was pregnant with my first and I thought it was ingenious. After laying-down-nursing you can lay on your side and sort of drape the baby over your hip or tummy or wherever so that they're upright and pat them on the back to burp them. Maybe that's totally obvious to everyone else, but I wonder if I ever would have thought of it had I not seen that picture!

My baby at 11 mos is still very burby/gassy. She has reflux from milk/soy intolerance. Is there something in your diet that might be upsetting him? Gripe water (Colic Calm) helped us as did holding her upright for 30 minutes after every feeding. I often carried her in a pack. We also elevated her for sleeping. That lasted until she was 5-6 months old. Now, I just make sure she is burped well after feeding and I'm still on a no dairy/soy diet. I use more upright nursing positions for her especially those that slow the flow.

I am not sure if burping is really bad. Babies often swallow air while feeding, which can make them fussy and result in spitting up. Frequent burping can expel this air from their stomachs and help to avoid these problems.
