HE Top Loader Wash Routine?

I have a Whirlpool Cabrio, which is an HE top loader. I'm trying to figure out a good wash routine, as we have the stinkies right now, and baby is only 9 weeks old! :

I've been trying to do a cold prewash, which has been delicate cycle, soak cycle (99 minute one), or sheets & towels cycle... I've tried each of those as my prewash cycle, with and without detergent, with and without Sun oxycgen cleaner..... I'm still getting mega poop stains - like some of the stains are so bright that it looks like they weren't washed. They don't smell, but they look really bad.

I'm using the sheets & towels cycle for the hot wash, as that uses a closer to "normal" level of water. It's still not quite as much water as a regular top loader, but it's a lot more than an HE would typically use.

I'm using Country Save detergent. I was using half scoop, but when I started using the sheets & towels cycle, I started using a full scoop. I tried half scoop last wash, and my diapers are ALL skunky smelling when peed in now. And again, this is a 9 week old baby, not toddler pee. :

I think I probably have hard water. I know there is a lot of limestone in the area (my county is "Limestone County", if that gives you an indication ). Detergents/soaps sud very easily in my water, but my water seems to behave like hard water otherwise, I think. I know regular detergents build up VERY easily in my water.

I'm going to pick up some Calgon water softener to give that a try. But I'm wondering what wash routine other HE top loader users use successfully? : The poop stains should be at least lighter than when I put them in, and the skunk smell has got to go!!! And the smell is all the diapers... cotton, hemp, bamboo... everything. I only have 2 diapers with any hemp in them. The rest is all cotton and bamboo. So it's obvious the diapers aren't getting clean.

I had a regular top loader when diapering my other kids, so I never got stinkies with them until they were toddlers.

I have the same W/D and use Country Save, too. Lately I've had stains like you. Right now I do a cold wash on the darks/colors setting-- light soil, NO spin. (I think maybe the no spin option, i.e having all the dipes soaking wet and heavy, tricks the washer into using more water...maybe?) Then I run the heavy duty cycle--- heavy soil, pre-soak, deep clean, extra rinse.

This time I put detergent in both, half scoop in the dark/colors, and almost a full scoop in the heavy duty cycle. I have VERY hard water. We'll see how it turns out.

I haven't met anyone yet who CDs with a Cabrio. We can be washer buddies.

Yes, washer buddies!

I've managed to deskunk the diapers... I did the Oxyclean/vinegar treatment for all of them, then stripped them big time with Dawn and also bleached them.

Still getting stains. Today, I've got the stained diapers sunning outside instead of going into the dryer.

I've been doing Oxyclean (really Sun Oxygen Cleaner) in a cold prewash on the sheets/towels setting, with heavy soil, no spin or low spin (still testing out which works better)... then the hot wash with heavy soil again on sheets/towels setting with detergent or Dawn... then another hot wash with heavy soil on sheets/towels setting with nothing added.

I even tried plain old Tide, but I can't take the perfume smell for one thing, and it isn't getting the poop stains out at all either. So it's back to Country Save as soon as it gets here (I ran out - it'll be here Wednesday). I used Dawn last night when I stripped the diapers. Oh, and I've been putting a bit of Calgon (not the full amount) in with the detergent cycle. That does seem to help with the skunk smell. I can't tell you how much I'm putting in there... I just pour a little bit and call it good.

Oxyclean & sun brand are heat activated if u fill ur sink w/straight hot tap h2o w/ a scoop let set for a hr or longer ( the longer the better) then wash as usual will get about any stain out. Start with clean dipes of course but this is my go to method

I may try Calgon soon. I just don't want to add another product/step, if you KWIM. I am hoping to make it work with just the wash cycles and Country Save. (Since I bought it by the case from Amazon--I am pretty much committed.)

Hmm...I'll have to look into sheets/towels versus the heavy duty cycle, which is what I use now.

I just got a pair of cabrios yesterday and I'm still trying to figure them out. I have done one load so far and I can't remember what setting I used! I find them to be really confusing after having a pretty old basic set.

That being said, I use Tide. I fill it to halfway to the 1 line (which is probably a Tbsp) and I have not had stink so far (4 months) I had stink all the time with ds1 using allens. So I'm sticking with the Tide!

Forgot to mention that the only way I have been able to get stains out is to hang in the sun. I do that every couple washes.

Last night, I soaked the diapers (sheets/towels setting level of water) in 5 scoops of Sun Oxygen Cleaner. Soaked all night. Then did a million hot washes with nothing all morning. Country Save came in around 1pm, so I did a wash with that (half scoop), then another million washes with nothing. My diapers smelled like clean water coming out.

We'll see how they do during the week. We had to do sposies for a couple days while I worked on a lower belly rash and mega-stripped the diapers. I'm anxious to get back into cloth especially at night! A sposie can't hold him all night, but a premium prefold can.

Lotus! I love my Cabrios, but I agree at first they can seem confusing. Actually, they're really easy now. I use only a few settings-- "normal" for whites, "darks/colors" for everything other than whites, "towels/sheets" for towels and sheets (lol), and heavy duty for diapers.

I don't use the delicate setting for "gentle" cycle items because I find that it doesn't agitate enough. I usually use the darks setting on light spin for my delicates.

Here's my diaper routine (so far it works pretty good, minimal stains on BG 3.0s)

--wash on Darks/colors, change to "light soil", change to "no spin", half scoop Country Save
--wash on Heavy Duty, heavy soil, pre-soak, deep clean, extra rinse (push all three buttons to add these), half scoop Country Save.

Boscopup uses the sheets/towels setting where I use heavy duty...I'm not sure about the difference in the water level, but it's worth looking into. Whichever uses more water would be the better way, I'd think.

Mine doen't have a sheets/towels setting. But it does have a whitest whites. Wonder if it has been renamed? So all in all you do 2 washes per load? Doesn't that take about 2 hours? I was surprised at how long the cycles are. My old machine was done in about 30 minutes.

I have noticed that my diapers started smelling. I wonder if its because I introduced some synthetics (previously had been using only prefolds) or if I just need to fool around with the settings more.

I'll have to try your routine.

Whitest whites is different from sheets/towels (and I think mine actually says "sheets", and then "towels" is in a hard-to-read smaller print and lighter color next to it). I used to use the whitest whites, but it seems to just be a really long hot cycle that utilizes the bleach dispenser.

What options do you have on your washer? Maybe we can figure out which one is the high water level one on yours.

I have: whitest whites, heavy duty, normal, casual, delicate, hand wash (wool), and then a rinse/spin cycle. I can also adjust the water level on the presets. SO maybe I should just do a medium level even if the load is small.
