I just realized I was an idiot! The 15th was TODAY, as in Saturday. I missed the meeting. :

Oh no! I'm sorry, Tammy. I knew something didn't look right to me when I saw your initial post but it didn't click with me that the day and date didn't match up!

Wahoo! Congratulations! Welcome to Fairbanks!

Hunting finally over

We got a moose this weekend!!
Dh likes to hunt during Bow season, since the moose are not being driven by other hunters and the rut yet.

That is awesome! We are not hunters, we prefer to "gather".

Gather fish and moose and caribou from our neighbors and friends! LOL

We're hunters AND gatherers as well as farmers. We were lucky enough to get a sheep already too. Today I made a trip to town to swap basil and chicken for raspberries and halibut. And the winter squash is ripening! Yay fall!

I'm another gatherer. I swear, if I had to rely on the land for my survival, I'd become a vegetarian in a heart beat. I can't eat anything that I know I'm responsible for it's death. I've even had to give away the halibut I caught, because I just *couldn't* eat it. I have issues! LOL I have zero problem buying it out of the meat case!

Polling the experts . . .

How do you who cloth diaper dry your diapers in the winter? I know that line drying them in the sun is better for them, but it seems like a lost cause in the winter.

Do you just hang them up in the bathroom? Or to get the sunlight, hang them up in the window?

I just put 'em in the dryer. I do love hanging diapers on the line in the summertime, though!

I put mine in the dryer too.

My diapers stink right now and I just stripped them. They have the pee stink smell to them but I know they're really clean and all. I clean them how it's recommended... cold rinse, hot wash with dye free detergent, rinse rinse rinse. Any recommendations on what I can try to get rid of the smell? Another CD ?... I have BG2 and 3's... they never stay velcroed in the laundry or dryer anymore. Any idea why and how I can remedy the situation?

I'm out here near Chena Ridge. So glad to be back here! Delta was lovely and quaint and will give me many fond memories, but I really am glad to be back in a population center.

I'd love to get together with some mamas and babes after I get my home unpacked!

What stinks - the inserts or the dipes? Are you using MF inserts? Have you tried boiling them and then running them through a rinse cycle (sounds gross, but it works!) ETA: Don't boil the BG's without checking if it's safe -- the snaps might melt, iirc...

What detergent are you using?

Maybe sunning would help, if we get any more sun...

Have you tried vinegar in the rinse?

How did you strip them, and did you watch to make sure there were no suds in the rinse? Vinegar in the rinse can help.

As to how to dry them in the winter, I always just put mine in the dryer because I don't like crunchy diapers. Sometimes I would hang them on the clothes bars in front of the wood stove. You can freeze dry them outside. My MIL has never owned a dryer and her 4 were all in cloth. Now, she lives in Michigan, not Alaska, but it does get cold there, if not as cold.

Are you certain you aren't using too much detergent?

When I washed mine (because I had a front loader that doesn't have as much water as a traditional machine) I'd run a rinse cycle with baking soda and vinegar, then I'd run the super super long cycle with an extra rinse and I used 2 tablespoons of soap.

Doing that, I only had to strip my hemp inserts once... and the boiling them did the trick.

Diaper stink...BTDT and it's not any easier when you live in Alaska.

I finally had to give up on cloth (all kinds) because Iris reacted SO badly to all of it. (She had weeping sores that only healed when we put her in disposables...horrible).

The stink especially stuck with the homemade fleece pocket dipes (which I lovingly sewed for years and years for each child)...I gave them away and hope they smell better somewhere else.

We stripped everything, we did vinegar rinses, we sun dried in the summer, you name it.

They still stunk. I don't know why.

I've never sunned my diapers. When I strip them I use dawn and do a ton of rinses (and check for suds). I'm not sure if both stink or one or the other. I'll have to check.
i normally use purex free and clear. And I always do extra rinses to get all the suds out. I haven't tried boiling or vinegar.

One other thing I tried was tea tree oil. The downside, is TTO by itself stinks :

I don't know if the detergent makes a difference (I would think it wouldn't) but I used plain ol tide and it worked wonders.

Well, I've had my membranes stripped, bloody show, and I just lost my mucous plug (all in the last 24 hours) so with any luck I'll be able to put all this diaper advice to use soon! Thanks guys!

I know none of these signs are anything definite, but it's still exciting to think that something COULD be happening soon.

Until then, I'll be stalking the message boards like crazy trying to pass the time!
