last week my nearly 7 year old dd really really enjoyed watching a 1940s flick Brother Orchid.

i notice with her she is moving away from children's movies. for instance her favourite movie right now is Across the Universe. so i am not talking about shirley temple movies. or black beauty. she also looooooooooooves charlie chaplin.

what other classic black and white movies could i rent for her?

One that I enjoyed watching with my parents when I was younger was Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. It's with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken with Don Knotts

Yours, Mine and Ours (the original with Lucille Ball and Peter Fonda)

Harvey

Little Women

Man's Favorite Sport (absolutely hilarious!!!)

Duck Soup (Marx Brothers)

It Happened One Night

Father Goose (I believe it is in color, but a great, funny Cary Grant/Leslie Caron film!)

Monkey Business

Funny Face (Audrey Hepburn & Fred Astaire)

Perhaps she might also like musicals???

My favorite black and white film of all time is Young Frankenstein. by Mel Brooks. It's a comedy and quite funny. It's not a horror film despite the title.

i must second harvey and bringing up baby. i loved them both as a kid.

i also loved the philadelphia story and to kill a mockingbird.

two others that come to mind are north by northwest and some like it hot although i was probably a bit older than seven when i saw those.

i was in love with pretty much anything featuring fred astaire (swing time, top hat, shall we dance and holiday inn come to mind). i also loved royal wedding, but that one's in color.

i adored musicals as a kid. many are in color, but they're so great and perhaps your daughter would enjoy them as well. some of my faves were singin' in the rain, guys and dolls, meet me in st. louis, hello, dolly, on the town, west side story, mame, high society. i could go on an on. my very first movie theatre memory wasn't a disney flick it was going to see hair with my mom when i was seven years old. i LOVED it then and still do.

happy viewing! how fun for your daughter (and you). i just can't wait until my daughter's old enough to share all my favorite movies with.

some great movies in these posts! i'm a big hitchcock lover. his films are beautifully shot, even the silent ones. most really aren't that scary by todays standards but you can always blow her mind with psyco! my absolute favorite hitchcock is an early one, "the lady vanishes."
old movies are a great way to bring up difficult subjects like gender roles and race issues too. so much has changed.
if she's into silents try "metropolis"

thanks mama's. i cant wait to introduce her to alfred hitchcock but i cant now. suspense is her thing. she cant stand it. it is painful for her. she totally freaks out adn gets a tummy ache. even simple kids movies she still freaks out. even if she has seen it before. then she brings in her own fears. like a boy going into the woods. there is no question at all about him getting lost. and yet she starts getting scared about it.

i cant wait to show her these movies.

It might be more of a boy thing, but you mentioned that she loves Chaplin and so do my boys so I thought that I'd throw out - Marx brothers movies. They just love them and all of the physical humor. Much of the witty dialogue is too quick for them to appreciate, and some too adult, but it cracks me up. I like that they'll appreciate the movies more and more as they get older. They're always thrilled when the Netflix envelope arrives and they hear it's a Marx brothers movie.

I understand what you mean about suspense. My oldest was only 3 1/2, but I vividly remember during "The Piglet Movie" he suddenly burst into tears and shouted, "But he's so far from home!" We quickly fast-forwarded to show him that Piglet and Pooh (I think) did make it home safely. I felt so bad to have traumatized my son while trying to entertain him. We left all storyline videos for a while -- when Piglet results in hysterics, what can you trust? -- and he would just watch the occasional Wiggles video with no suspense worries. At nine, he does like some suspense, but he still gets physically shifty and giggles a lot.
