It's a godsend, but I find the smell wholly unappealing.

hiya. could your rice sock have gotten wet?
whats the smell like? moldy or like rice?
if its moldy throw it out. if its just the rice smell, and it comes with a thicker cover, i would add a couple of drops essential oil to it. say a relaxing one like lavender. but remember that'll stick to it for a while.

Switch to Flax seeds instead of rice. I just get them in the bulk section of my local store. Non-organic are only .80/pound where I am. I find they don't have quite as strong of a scent as rice (and I find the flax scent rather plesant, but YMMV). You could also add dried herbs or flowers (lavender especially).
Bonus: I've read that flax seeds actually work better than rice. First, because the oil inside the seed is what heats up, giving off somewhat 'moist heat' like rice does, but rice will eventually dry out, where the oil is traped inside the seeds so they last much longer. Or something like that anyway. Also I like how flax seeds are so much smaller thn rice... it's more comfortable leaning against a flax sock, than a rice sock IMO.
