What are you reading?

What are the must have pregnancy books? I am pregnant with my third child, and I have all the dr.sears books, and what to expect.... But I would love to read something new and somewhat geared towards moms of 2 or more kids.
The books on my list to pick up are:
Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth and Spiritual Midwifery
The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth

I just can't seam to find ones geared towards Mom's with more than 1 child...most seem to be for first time mothers....which makes tons of sense, just hoping that I could read something with a different spin on it.

THe Thinking Woman's guide is an awesome read. I'm planning to pick up adventures in tandem nursing...and I'm on the lookout for something regarding sibling rivarly.

We could use a helpful book on cooperation and sibling rivalry around here too. Which brings up a good point... I would love to share a book with my kids that shows easy to understand pictures of what the baby looks like inside of Mama's womb. I love seeing pictures of what the fetus looks like too, and I know that my 6 year old is going to be asking a million questions. Maybe a pregnancy calender for kids...that sounds bad, but you know what I mean.

With my DS's pregnancy, I found this book at the library that had these color photos of what the fetus looks like in utero. Very cool.

I'm occasionally flipping through my Sears pregnancy book, but I read it enough the first time, I think.

I'll probably review Bradley books when I'm getting a bit further along.

I would love to read "Panic-Free Pregnancy", but my library doesn't have it. Might have to do an interlibrary loan.

DD-wise, we're reading a lot of the Sears Children's Library. We've got "You Can Go to the Potty" for other reasons, but we've recently introduced "Baby on the Way". I think that book is the biggest reason that DD has figured out that there's a baby in my tummy. She loves to quote the bit about getting mommy crackers and fizzy water when I'm laying, sick, on the couch. We'll probably pick up "What Baby Needs" closer to the baby's arrival, but we've already read it once in the bookstore.

I love the Sears books because they talk about the mom going to a birth center and having a midwife, they show co-sleepers, and they talk about and show babies nursing.

I'm also a big fan of the old Mister Rogers books because they've very straight-forward and have lots of pictures (Sears has drawings). We have his "The New Baby" (as well as a potty book -- see a trend? ), but DD hasn't chosen to read that one yet.

I just took a look at the sears kids books on line, and I really like the 'new baby' one, and maybe will get a few books for the kids...(I think I might need that potty learning one too) ....ones about what life will be like with a nursing newborn, and a more detailed one for my older child that shows real pictures of the fetus. I love this one:

Thanks for the suggestions....I hope my library has some of them...otherwise I need to start saving .

Reading Natural Pregnancy Book by Romm. I've had all sort of recommendations for this one. It is about nutrition.

I have heard great things about Siblings Without Rivalry- I think I may have to start reading that.

I'm currently reading Playful Parenting and LOVE it.

I've shown DS pictures of the baby just from a pregnancy tracker online, but I'd like to find some kids books that show this type of thing, too. I'll have to check out the Sears ones.

I'm also reading a novel.. Shanghai Girls. It's ok.

I'm reading "Birthing From Within" right now, and it's really challenging me. I'm getting "Born in the USA" by Marsden Wagner in a couple of weeks, and I'll read that next.

I've read TONS of pregnancy and childbirth books in my preparation to be a Child Birth Educator and doula, and my favorites are Penny Simpkin's books. I like Shiela Kitzinger, too, but Penny Simpkin is more unbiased. Henci Goer's Thinking Woman's Guide and Obstetric Myths are good for people who need/want some research to back up their non-traditional birthing choices, but she is openly hostile toward Allopathic medicine, which I really don't like.

Penny Simkin is awesome she was my childbirth instructor first time around!

Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth is really to the point. Since you've already given birth twice I can't imagine it's going to tell you anything new. Spiritual Midwifery, on the other hand, is an awesome read. It's completely different from anything out there. Ina's Guide to Childbirth actually has some exerpts from Spiritual Midwifery... I'd go with just the latter.

Am I naive for thinking I really don't need to be reading birthing books? I mean, same idea as last time, right?

I have copies of "How to talk so your kids will listen..." "Adventures in Gentle Discipline" (same author as " " Tandem Nursing) and am always looking through them for inspiration/support. They're like my life manuels. I've got a copy of "Siblings without Rivalry" on the way.

I'm also currently reading Power of a Positive Mom - which is Christian; if you are too you might like it!

I also have all the Sears books, mainly for reference.

I love Ina May Gaskin.

I also really like the womanly art of breastfeeding.

Thank you for the book suggestions ....

I just finished "Baby Catcher; Chronicles of a Modern Midwife", by Peggy Vincent. It was laying around the house, and I can't believe I never read it before now. I loved reading about all the wonderful and not so wonderful birth stories...It was not a pregnancy book, but more about Peggy's journey from nursing school in the 60s to her private practice as a Midwife who delivered countless homebirths. I really got pumped up for my Birth...hmm, maybe I should have waited a little bit to read this one...still many, many months to go.
I will be special ordering my books from the local book store....and I think I am going to get "Spiritual Midwifery", though I may end up getting Birthing from Within too....
Oh, and I did end up getting some books for my kids at the Library...one with detailed pictures of the Fetus....My 3 year old loved it.
